my 1.4 sr (j reg )has kind of splined star shaped bolts
my mark 1 1.3 engine has normal hex head bolts i havent taken the head off yet but does any one know if you can use the standard hex heads on mk2 engine or is thread or lentgh different

cant see there being any difference, but you cant re-use headbolts, though

no difference at all, they're both the same length with the same thread

Does that mean you have to change them every time you remove a head like you would a gasket?

Or do you mean that you cant transfere them to a different hole/engine?

Why can't they be reused?

Yep, you have to change them everytime.
They are stretch bolts, they stretch to reach the correct torque.
Once they have stretched, they wont tighten properly again

the splined ones are simply VXL's newer bolts.. eg they arent making the hex head ones anymore and its only te odd pattern part people that will supply them too.

where do you get the socket from to remove those star shaped bolts?

Motor factors, B&Q, any tool shop should have them.

halfords own or draper ones are good.

Got a rail of draper star bits for ?25 (good value imo)

i used a normal hex head it worked as the bolt heads are hex shaped but ju are splined too

think it was 15mm or some wear near
