View Full Version : Revs Dying on Me - Idle Probs at Junctions

Hi, If anyone as ANY sugestions for this pleeeease let me know.

Car = 1.4 injection Nova 92

Revs keeping dying at lights and roundabouts when i put the clutch in, they just go down down and down, most of the time they pick up again once i'm stopped and level but under heavyish braking and clutch in they just die.

Its as if the faster i'm going and the harder the braking (ie: the sudden clutch in and the car tilting forward) makes it worse.

Should also mention, its always seems fine and dandy on a cold engine - under choke...plenty or revs etc. but gets worse when engine is fully warmed up.

Sometimes they totally conk out the engine.

What I've tried already:
Changed Leads
Changed Plugs
Changed Dizzy Cap and Arm
Changed Fuel Filter
Changed Idle Air Stepper Motor Valve (supposed to solve it)
Can't hear any air leaks anywhere
Adjusted Timing slightly (qualified mechanic did it!)

Any ideas guys??
Cheers.

hi, seems as if this hose is getting clogged up with yellowy grease like stuff maybe causing it. connects to EGR valve i believe............http://http://img500.imageshack.us/my.php?image=arrowtohose0to.jpg%5D%5BIMG%5Dhttp://img500.imageshack.us/img500/8729/arrowtohose0to.th.jpg%5B/IMG%5D%5B/URL%5D

any ideas to stop it??

thats your breather hose, head gaskets gone, you'll probably notice losing water too

and it might be the cause as when you brake hard they'll be more pressure pushing the water down the expansion tank as the outlet is near the front so the water will all try and go forward, laws of psychics etc lol

A 1.4i nova engine dont have an EGR valve.

Thats the breather hose, it should have yellowy oil gunk in as its a breathe pipe to the crank case for oil fumes etc.
Not enough to block the pipe up tho, if its blocked, clear it out.
The oil in the breathepipe is nothing to do with the head gasket.

You could try changing the speed sensor, its in the top of the gearbox and connects to the ecu and can cause probs with idle if it starts playing up.
Are you getting the ecu light flashing up?

They don't have an EGR???? What's this arrow pionting to then in the pic.....

its what the "breather hose" is connecting to. Is it just a breather box?
It seems to have been better since i cleared out the hose, but how can i clear out that box where its all coming from and how can i stop it?

The car idles fine when at a stand still so I'm reluctant to go down the speed sensor route - how much are they? and are the pretty straight forward to fit? If cheap it would be worth a go.

Only seems to lose revs when braking and putting the clutch in?!?!

It will be the cts, or the coolent temp sensor, I reckon.

They are cheap and easy to change.

Yes thats just a breather box from the crankcase.

You could try changing the CTS like Will said, but i cant see that causing the car to cut out, it normally just gives a rich fuel mixture/bad idle.

They are cheap to buy tho, and worth changing anyways.

The reason i suggested speed sensor, is that the ecu monitors the speed of the car, if you notice your idle is high sometimes then when you stop and wait a second or two the idle speed comes down to normal. Thats because the ecu adjusts the idle only when the car isn't moving.
So when you stop it could be adjusting the idle wrong and causing the car to cut out.
I cant guarantee it is that tho.

Mine occasionally cuts out, i just restart the engine and forget about it,lol.

yeh thats sounds right - sometimes it does idle up at 1200rpm, and other times it'll idle back at 900rpm. Maybe i'll try bagging one of those speed sensors, probably best to get a new one hey.
cheers.

Wer is the speed sensor on this car? what does it look like?

i would of said something wrong with the valve lettin in the air

cheers. The sensor wires plug in next to the speedo cable.

That 1200rpm will just be when the engine is cold, the ecu alters the idle, like a choke does on a carb car.
900rpm is the normal warm engine idle speed.

Usually i would suggest ICV if the car cuts out, but if you have changed that for one you know works fine then it cant be.

Does the ECU light ever flash up when driving?
