Alright guys rite,

I have a spare day on friday so I am going to change the piston rings and the valve seal rubbers,

Any suggestions on where to get the rings and should I get standard rings or cord (stepped rings).

cheers

How come your wanting to change them?

The engine has now been in for 3 weeks and it has used 3 gallons of oil and is smoking like hell lol .

There are no engines for sale near me so I am just going to fix this one, despite the heavy smoking it still pulls very well and it must be a good engine to get 95bhp with just a 4 branch?

does it smoke all the time no matter what its doing?? mine smokes when i let off the accelerator because it needs the valve stem seals replacing and thats gone through about 2 litres in a week

It smokes while I let off the accelerator and after an overrun, as well as when I accelerate hard.

I know that it needs valve stem seal rubbers but the amount of smoke coming out of it and the amount of oil its using it cant just be the valve rubbers,

So i am thinking while the head is off just drop the sump and change the rings aswell i have heard that these engines need a set of rings now and again.

any idea where to get them from?

cheers

Would you recommend standard rings or chord ones?

cheers

feck knows what chord rings are lol. if its a std engine, just get std rings...
dont forget to deglaze the bores

Replacing piston rings and valve stem seals is still going to cost a bit.
How much are piston rings, at least ?40 aint they?
Plus the valve seals, new headgasket and headbolts etc.

All money you could put to another engine.

Best quote I got today was ?50 quid for rings and ?7 for a headgasket, already got the stem seal rubbers so say ?100 all in to get an engine which may not still be any good  .

How many miles per gallon should I be getting now with normal to fastish driving?

top ring is plain.. 2nd ring is a stepped ring according to my man

Done a compression test full throttle and got 186-187-186-187 so give or take they are all pretty good.

So I am banking on oil rings, and worn valve stem rubbers.

or a big hole in the sump lol

lol it went in 3 weeks ago today and it has used:

1 gallon silkoline semi sinthetic

1 gallon carlube 10/40

1 gallon 15/40

notice the downward trend in oils!

When a friend is behind me and I am giving it some throttle they have to close their windows and vents because of the stench!lol

Yeah number 1 and 2 are a little bit oily.

3 and 4 seem fine.

when I had the head off to change the headgasket there wasnt hardly any play in the pistons:confused: .

If your going to the extent of putting piston rings in the engine and taking the cylinder head off,why not take out the valves and lap them in so they seat properly? Just a bit of advice, dont use the cheapest parts out there because the head gasket will only blow in a short period of time. Try a 'paign' gasket set, their reasonably priced and i havent had any problems with quality.

The rings might be fine, it could be the gakset thats breached an oilway for 1 and 2

Get the head off, head skimmed and a new HG and headbolts fitted.
