Im tempted to flush the tailgate on my Nova as the back needs respraying anyways... so instead of going through all that welding and bodyfilling wouldnt it be a helluva lot easier (and smoother) to fit a huge plastic sheet of say acrylic to the whole lower piece of the tailgate and smooth it in at the sides (by the lights) that would look mint wouldnt it? I've just finished mine and it took aaaaagggggggggggeeeeeeeesssssss of filling sanding filling sanding etc etc. :(
I would have thought that a better way to do it would be to weld some sheet metal across the whole boot, hammering the welds as you go for less filling. That would be stronger as well but I would still put expanding foam behind it.

it would be too flexible so when your banging out yer little tunes it would vibrate and crack the paint

try a full metal sheet, ive done it with very thin ally (no rust) if you use countersunk rivets theres no need to weld it.
