I have got a 1.8 8v in my nova, i want to get hold of a 6 speed box for it. Would it be able to pull in 6th and what sort of speed would you been looking at ...?
I reckon it could pull the limiter in 5th at the moment so id be interested to see what i could achieve in 6th
cheers ppl
id say it wont pull at all in 6th.... so the extra work of fitting the F28 and the weight is really just going to slow you down in the long run...

not sure about top speed. I assume you know already that you would need the cav/calibra 4x4 turbo box and fit the aftermarket plate to change to front wheel drive. Can't imagine this will be cheap but you'r car is 160bhp (i think) so it would be well worth it and you've prob spent thousand(s) on getting you 1.8 up to that hp figure, fair play mate
erm WTF...
to pull 160 from a 1.8 is fairly easy and cheap lol.
and its the torque that is the problem... or rather a lack of it to drive the uber tall 6th gear...
imho its really not wort it unless you get a LET

sorry stu your rite, i'm thinking of the older carbed 1.8 which i think was maybe around 110 not sure though. Would i be rite in saying that the 1.8 mpi would be close to 130 std?

Well 160bhp aint that bad imo. It pulls well and probs would beat quite a few others but i dont race it just drive it fast :) . If u hit the red line in 5th with the f28 surly it would pull, maybe not much but it should pull....
Or maybe when i get her reving to 8k it'll be able to pull in the 6th gear...
dont want a let, or xe. I know there gr8 but i like what i have so ill stay put for now. 8)
The only advantage you'd gain is a slightly better MPG on long motorway trips.
How quick are you going when it hits the limiter in 5th? Im guessing very far over the speed limit, and theres no way on a track you'll ever get near top speed, so why do you want to do it may I ask? Do you have a private runway or do you just want to be able to say down the pub that your nova is capable of a higher top end?
IMO, no one will believe you anyway so just lie to them

I like the idea of having a 6 speed nova tbh. Might be building a 2.0 8v turbo engine so i may use it on that. Or i might tune the bollo*s off my 1.8 with a turbo etc, with the mods it should pull in 6th...Well i would hope.
me mate has a 205 pug with a 2.0 8v turbo lump. Thats got a 6 speed box and its awesome 8)
Cant decide... :|

So you've got a 160bhp engine which is not slow by any standard in a little nova shell, a six speed would be really fun if you managed to change the fd to something like a 4.53, so you would have great acceleration up the gears. you'd get alot higher revs in 6th gear, plus you could shift thru gears much quicker, i'd say it would be alot of fun, prob be like driving one of those 6 speed 150 GT TDi golfs, its very fast up the gears. Altough i think changing the FD in a big block box is easier said than done, i'm 99% sure that the pinion gear is welded on the shaft and does not clip of like on the small block boxes. So you'd be talking about getting the astramax 4.53 cwp (possibly two crown wheels dunno) and taking it and the shaft to a enginener to weld on a laize (sp?)
But i'm just thinking that the 6 speed box internals may be alot different than the std big block boxes, so what i'm suggesting maybe rubbish. Some1 ere is bound to know, i prepere to stand and be corrected and looked with shame upon lol cheers

Does anyone know anything about the f28 box.
That sounds like a mighty fine idea to me. May get hold of a f28, look into gettin the fd changed, if not just put it in ands see how she goes...
At the end of the day could always just put my f16 box back in if its rubbish.
What do u need to do, change on the 6 speed box to enable it to fit?
any ideas ppl??

i know that you have to buy a plate (maybe some other stuff to) for closing off the rear transfer end of the gearbox, in order to convert it to front wheel drive. I'm nearly sure i've seen advertisments for it in Total Vauxhall mag. But i think it comes as a kit cause i imagine there is more to do than just fit the plate for front wheel drive. Any how someone here is bound to know

what mods have you got to get to 160bhp?
you need to convert it to fwd, which is easy, then cut off your std nova g box mount and replace it with one that sits almost above the cross member  and you will need the relevant mount that bolts to the box! you also need to change the speedo drive ring that sits on the f28 diff to a f20 one. make sure you get a mechanical speedo drive f28 and not an electronic one!
if it was me i wouldnt bother for your engine. id try some different fd ratio's first. or if the bottom end can take it up the rpm limit!
The FD pinon on the big block boxes arent "welded" on they are cast on lol so there will be no welding of other FD's in... Also there are no other FD's as standard available for the F28, so your lookign at getting a custom one made and from the likes of quaiffe thats going to be uber money.....
for the cash and effort involved simply change your 5th gear ratio from an F16WR and the FD from an F20... that will crank your top speed up if thats all your after
