IF it devates from the standard font or size in anyway its technically illegal.
However when i had a slight itallic plate a few years back of the 4 times i got stopped about it 3 took the view that if they could read it they were happy. one got arsey n gave me a VDR? (vehicle defect report (IIRC?)) that ment i had to take it to an MOT station n get it stamped to prove i had changed them back. - they ended up back on the moment i was home

Also had a 70% size front plate on my Nova:

it lifted an eyebrow at MOT time but still passed. Copper also told me if he saw me with it next time he'd fine me - but he never saw me again

afaik they're pretty harsh on number plates now, mate of mine who had a personalised one got told to remove it or face a fine as the letters were spaced incorrectly!

I had that above plate on for a year n half (thru 2004) and only got questioned about it once.
The itallic one was on for over 2 yrs.

Bought GF this plate for an early xmas pres and shes had it since november with no problems so far:

letters tweeked and the company that made the plates stuck a 'for show use only' warning on them

as a precaution i had a a set of standard plates made up which she has in boot - should sweeten any copper that does get arsey.

Oh and my mum n dad both have personal plates that are spaced incorrectly (S111S SG) and (N1CCN) and in the yrs theyve had them theyve never had problems.

I make plates up at work, and have italics on the front and a standard plate on the rear, but planning a smaller square motorbike plate on the rear because of a flushed boot.
Tha DVLA consider all non standard plates illegal and you can get up to 3 points or so or a fine of ?30 to ?60.
Letters must be of standard size, no bigger, no smaller (except motobike plates) and the space between letters must be half the width of the letters.
All new/replacemant number plates now must be registered by the maker/car shop for DVLA or they get a ?5000 fine - hence having to take in your documents to stop car cloning.
