Might remember a while back I had a hole in my tank. I finally sourced a new one, ?45. Got it home and took the old tank off.

Im not a mechanic, i dont pretend to be a mechanic. Im a sparky and the way i look at the fuel system is like a wiring circuit, fuel gets pumped from the tank, to the injectors, fuel that isnt used goes back along the fuel lines to the tank again and this cycle repeats itself, Is that the right kind of idea?

What i was wanting to know was why my new tank has a big hole in the top (it came with a rubber gasket and screws to fit the holes) and my old tank doesnt. This hole seems to line up with the hole thats under the back seats, dont know if thats important or not.

What that old pipe that has been cut off was for?

Am i right in thinking the pipe on the tank that curls around the inside is the feed pipe to the pump, so that it can pump the petrol from the very bottom of the tank?

The two lines that go to the engine, would the fattest of the two conect to the pump?

The final question, maybe most important is if anyone recognises the pump and what side i connect to the fuel lines that go to the engine and what side i connect to the tank itself.

I daresay i could try it one way and if it doesnt work try it again, but that would be a whole lot of extra hassle, ANY help that anyone can offer would be a real boost.

alright mate

the big hole on the top is for your fuel sender. i would say that you are correct with the ticker line going to the lump and the thin one back. i'm afaid i can't help with the pump. just a thought, try putting 12v across it with the tube in some petrol and see what happens. should tell you which way it goes.

cheers

Ok cheers m8, il try that with the 12volt battery.

don't want to sound like a tube but whats this sender you said the big hole is for? and why wasnt there a hole in the old tank?

[edit] Ok i found out what the sender is, I think mine was on the back of the tank(not in any of my pictures) there is a hole for it on my new tank, its in the same place as the old tank. This still leaves me with the big hole on the top, should i just blank it off with a bit of steel plate?

The big hole in the top is where the fuel pump mounts for the newer Nova's (injection models) IIRC, whereas the older Nova's have the pump mounted externally.

(My 1.2i K reg has the pump in the tank, in the big hole)

yes thats a spi injection tank. (internal pump)
so unless u buy a pump to suit ul need an MPI injection tank.

what model do u have?

as for the pipes -
on ur old tank u have 2 near the filler neck - the wider one is the breather for the filler neck the thinner is for the return from the active thingy canister found in front wing of GSI/SRI and other CAT models models (just block it off if u dont have one)

it was a 1.2 merit, but it has been 2litred, not by me.

So i think i get what your saying. It will be ok to use the same pump that was used before, which is from a cavalier and mounted external, and that hole at the top isnt needed for me.

your best thing to do would be to get a mpi pump from a corsa or astra and fit that to the tank in the big hole in the top

this would also mean you dont need to run the external pump

right, i went to a scrappies and told what i needed, he gve me a pump that fits the hole from a mk3 astra, 1.4 1994 plate, he didnt say if it was MPI though, is there anyway of telling by looking at it?

Im going to have to go back to the breakers tomorow anyway to get a plug/conector for the pump.
