do i need to cut the shocks

Considering some spax aprings, for a 1.2i hatch all standard wheels, blah blah, been reading....yes reading...lol :lol: , and it says with a 40mm drop i may need shorter shocks, all i wanna do is replace the springs can i just do this or do i need to get shorter shocks?

you buy shorter shocks... it actually means the shock rod is shorter. DO NOT shorten a STD one.

You could get away with 40mm springs on std shocks, but considering they've probably put up with 15+ years of abuse, adding shorter springs will only hasten them towards being knackered, and you'll probably find the ride will still be quite sloppy.
