Hey guys, im in need of some help

Basically, i do a HNC Electronics day release course, paid for by my company, and the college has given us a 15 month project, where we can make pretty much anything electronics related we want...

So, my idea was to make up an EPROM chip for my Clio's ECU, similar to a superchip, but i need pointing in the right direction

- What equipment/software would i need to be able to program an EPROM chip? Any guides/books anyone knows of that would help me??

I know its not going to be easy, but is something that i would love to be able to do, and could earn me some money as well

Any help is greatly appreciated :D

erm well youd need to get a chip reader and "suck" the program out of the main eprom on the circuit board. Then you need to trawl through the assembler that you have and try to find what "looks like" the spark and fuel maps...

Thats basically how "superchips" do it but then they have been doing it for years and years.

ideally you should be making something from hardware and maybe add a little bit of software if need be.

For my A-Level stuff i made an infra red rev counter and then a digitally controlled power supply.
Other things made were a mock up of a traffic light control system (very cool if you get it doing trick things to demonstrate grid locks etc), an ultrasonic uniquie code transmitter (handy for alarms etc), digital sound processors and so on. At uni some of the guys made a very basic ecu from a Pic that ran single point injection system (it worked too lol)

Im not saying that a superships idea is "bad" its jsut not what id say was "good" as you can wind up fecking things up royally very quickly if your not carefull lol

cheers for your help Stu, i'll start looking around for assemblers and readers...

I can see what your saying about fecking things up easily, and it not being much in the way of electronics, but one of the guys on the course is making a guitar so i reckon a custom EPROM is more relevant than that!!!

If it turns out too hard, i might try and see if i can buy a superchip with my project budget, compare it to my original chip and then make my own, with a different rev limiter or something lol

the circuitry inside an electric guitar is quite trick in all fairness..... lol

there are all sorts of assembly language packages about etc, youve got to find otu what the main chip on the ecu is and then get the relevant reader hardware (this is bastard expensive if your college hasnt got one already)
