alternator wire

right on my sr alternator i had the red wire which goes on the bolt on the adjuster bracket. then theres the wire which bolts on the side. theres one more though, on my sr there was a grey colour wire that just clipped on but iv'e fitted an alternator off a 1.2spi and its not a clip its a bolt, just wondering what this wire does as iv'e left it off and the alternator works fine. would i be ok just cutting the clip off the wire and gettin a circle thing so its held on by the bolt. one last thing just out off interest. all the alternators iv'e looked at has a second black wire and a black box on whereas my sr one didn't, whats that all about?
