I never bought any filters for my Dellorto's, i'm coming back home for the weekend and it's insured so i'l be using it for a couple of days.

When i did the conversion i took it for a test drive with no filters, and it was fine. Do i really need to buy some filters (sox, box e.t.c) now or should it be ok for 2 days max ?

Reason i ask - Have alot to do, and going somewhere, buying and fitting filters is the last thing i want to be doing !

also, does a piper-x box filter fit behind a 1.6T40 with a full blukhead ?

dont ask me which ones to buy etc

However a mate of mine ran his 45 jenveys without them and altough he only used it as a daily driver, a stone flicked up uder the bonnet off the road and went down No 2 and fucked his head and piston etc!!

State of roads nowadays id reccomend!!

Make sure there not restrictive tho!

I would use filters for road use Nick.
TBH it takes 1 second for some grit to enter the engine, and its game over.

I think most people just use theres without filters on the track, as the tarmac is obviously a damn sight better than the s**te road surfaces.

yer i'm not saying i'm going to use it permanently without filters, just for the two days im back home.

I suppose that all it would take is a little stone e.t.c

anyone recommend, socks ? a large box type filter ? seen some little mesh/gauze things that go in the end of the trumpets ?

personally i have never risked it. Whether its ok or not is personal preference at the end of the day as i know ALOT of people through raod going peeps onto the rally circles that dont bother

Way i always saw it, only takes one silly little thing to knacker something, and i could never of afforded to repair it straight away so the balance has always been in favour of filters

Seemingly, the sock type Filters are pretty restrictive, but the sausage type, (the long one piece item that covers all 4 trumpets) is ment to be the best solution, Not expensive either.

You bunch of jessies "all it takes is for one little stone...blah blah blah"

I didn't run filters for a while and I never had any problems. I don't run a cambelt cover either, and there is just as much chance of a stone getting caught in the teeth and it's game over.

However...saying all this, it's probably better to be safe than sorry. For a temporary measure do what Riggy suggests, but perhaps look at getting a filter of some type when you are ready to drive the car on a regular basis.

With the tights idea. Make sure they are streached over nice and tight and secured firmly as well. You don't want them getting sucked in. Its supprising now much suction there is!

as with dan i know of a fair few rally folk who dont bother with filters and we all know how dusty a rally stage can get....

lol, i don't run a cam belt cover either.

I think i'l risk it for 2 days, but does anyone know if the piperx box/suasage filter fits ?

and yer it works out about ?80

I've never really got this, i dont see the point of not fitted the cambelt cover?
Any opinions?

May well be wrong, but i think its because on verniers you might need to see the timing marks for some reason or another...

lol to show them off lol

id always use a cam cover or filters , as its not worth it if it did happen

running no cambelt covers is to allow for rapid inspection in motorsport service areas. and i guess when the engines etc are built by motorsport engineers they dont bother with the cover for road use either. Ive left mine off to save weight ;)

i don't use and havn't used filters for 18 months now.

I did look into getting some ram-air sock type but larkspeed didn't have em in stock. Kinda left it.

Probably ought to. i'd prefer the 'sausage' type but there is not much room. 90mm from the back of the carburetor to the bulkhead.

I've got 45mm trumpets on so i'd want filter in the range of 70-90mm.

Not many to choose from.

that's certainly right. I took mine to a motorsport engineering outfit to have it put it and set-up (didn't have the time or facilities to do a good job at home) and he used no cam belt cover out of personal preferance . must be a habit they get into.

I think i'l risk it, as snowface said the pipecross suasage filter looks like a really really tight fit - but i have very short trumpets, so i guess i would be ok ?

the sock filters do look restrictive

That would be very nice of you ! thanks !

I'm probably coming up on the train you see, not too sure though. If there is a definete way of me picking them up on the way, and dropping it back for you when i come back down that would be a great help !

i may be venturing to protec on the sat if i can book an RR session, preston is near you is it not ?

but don't worry about it if it's too much hassle i'l need to buy my own at some point

Right, just for the crack, how does your car run in the wet? Do you encounter any problems with water in the Carbs, or in Cold Morning starts etc as these are the main concerns i'm having about fitting the lot to my car.

for added peace of mind i run a filter, used to use a pipercross air box then it fell aprt due to brake and clutch cleaner chewing thru it, but now im using a dome filter. the air box makes things very quiet, ideal for long journeys, the dome filter is just as loud as no filter at all which is nice!

i used it for a few days with no filter, looks good under the bonnet and sounded ace, but the fact the engine cost me all my money id cry if broke it for the cost of a filter

the only afternoon i spent driving it was absolutly hammering it down.

They were fine in the wet. Seeing as they are jetted for a X-flow 1.3 they idled pretty well, and were fine. It was pretty cold too

i don't think you'd have a problem with carb icing either, like i did on my old pierburg.

Only problem i encountered was overfueling slightly, i have no pressure reg and they bogged down slightly when you dropped it down a gear and gave it some throttle, but once the revs picked up the overfueling cleared off

Snowface

if its jetted for a 1.3 i wouldn't go revving it much till you got it jetted properly.

Good to know its running though nick.

My 40's run fine on cold mornings, wet.

I do notice car runs slightly better in dry conditions, probably cause there is less moisture in the air so get better combustion.

Im with Dan on this one. I run an ITG sausage filter over my TB's and always take the time to re - fit the cam cover. With my luck, leaving them off is just tempting the law of the sod!
