if you cant get the filter off with a belt, try stabbing a screwdriver through it and then using that for leverage ;) Or water pump pliers

as for the sump gasket. drop the downpipe off and that will make life much easier. Dont forget to RTV (automotive silicone) both sides of the cork gasket to make sure that bastid dosent leak again

RTV is your best friend ;)

rtv is baaad ass silicone. its designed for automotive use. you can get small tubes of it mabe by loctite

i get big caulking gun tubes of the stuff made by silverhook, ill see if i can get a bulk buy on the go to sell on here lol. its got about 8 tubes in the nova for various jobs like gluing in the poly carb, sealing the gearbox (used a whole gun full), sealing the engine, re caulking the body joints, "solid" engine mounts etc.

you can also use that blue hematite too if your stuck for it.

if there's oil on the seal of the sump there's a good chance its coming from somewhere else and is just ending up there.
i.e. crankcase breather, cam housing cover or filter.

lol, i was actually thinking whether i put a screwdriver init the try that, but wasnt sure if itd work, but looks like i'll be trying that in a minute then,

yer snowface, i did think about that i thought it might be coming from the filter.

then again most of the engine is oily.

cheers all, lew

Sealant is a must with vauxhall sump gaskets....especially XE's!!

To get oil filters off, I usually put a latex glove on and tun it...gives you loads more grip.
