When you bore out an engine, is there a rule as to how far you can go? I ask because my mates lad is gonna buy a nova, but realistically is looking to only be able to insure a 1200. Obv he wants the carb engine as opposed to spi but he wants to know if it can be bored out to a 1300.
I know you'll all say why dont he just buy a 1300, but thats the way he wants it so he's asked me to see if anyone knows
Cheers

i see what you mean, but i doubt they would be able to bore a 1200 to a 1600, im sure they would start with a new block

1600 has a longer stroke than the 1.2, bores are slightly bigger aswell.
if you go over 2mm then you are getting very close to the water jacket around the cylinders.
1mm is most common.
tbh your frined is better og getting a 1.3 bottom end and using a 1.2 head. Cheaper than a re-bore and pistons. (+any labour)

didnt some one meantion that the 1.2i an 1.2 carb are different bottom ends and thus using the 1.2i crank an rods in the carb one it becomes a 1.4 due to one having bigger pistons and the other a longer stroke. Not 100% sure on that but im sure ive heard some one say it before?

little end of rod is different thou!
so you need them too mad then youve gotta sort the compression ratio out

Sounds to me like your mate is trying to scam the insurance company by claiming it as a 1.2 even though it'll be a 1.3?
Jim
to be honest the amount you are going to have to spend on new pistons, rings, a rebore, assembly, gaskets, possibly new rods, big end and main cap bearings.......
is gonna cost more than the difference between 1200 and 1300!
so is it really worth it?

LOL wondered how long it would take for someone to realise. Yes Jim you are right. This wasnt a pointless post though, he does want to do it that way as he's aware it will say 1.2 on the block, hence not giving away its true potential to insurers
so dont do it....
for the cost and effort involved (and the fact you HAVE to tell them) you might aswell fir a 1.6 engine.
or just be a silly mofo and tune the 1,2 ;)

Total waste of time if hes only doing it to dodge the premium.
A 1.4 luxe or GL 5 door will be cheaper to insure than a 1.3 SR so if hes wetting himself for more power, why doesnt he just get one of those and make it look nice?

The way to do it is.... Get a 1.2 from a breaker. Get a 1.3 from a breakers. Use the larger bored 1.2 block, head & pistons. Use the 1.3 crank, rods & sump. Build back up with the 1.3 cam etc & use a post 87 1.3 inlet manifold & Pierburg 2e3 (SR) carb. Thats a 1400 motor with 1.2 engine no's. Insurance friendly cos its all GM parts.

Only insurance friendly if you tell them what youve done and the power increase you achieve.
If you dont, its still evasion.
