Hi my little 1.2 merit is a real petrol guzzler!! it seems to be ok round town, but on the motorway at around 70 it loves the petrol. It is a 1.2, 4 gears, manual choke. i was wonderin if it was cos its a 4 gear, less economy? any tips would be greatly accepted. Thanx :o

well erm its swings and roundabouts. but id say first thing to do is a new set of plugs/leads/dizzy cap and rotor arm. then spend ?25 on a tune up from a crypton tuner (or similar), then consider a 5 speed change if its not sorted

what sort of milage has the engine done? Lots of engine wear on a high milage engine.

my 1.2 carbed was on 147K when i sold it and the cam looked in prefect nick, even with my awesome 2 year serviceing routine lmao.

it returned approx 35-40ish mpg on the M4 swansea - london run... regularly

also bear in mind the fuel gauge on nova's is sh*te, mine indicates 3/4's when it's actually half full.

a 1.2 merit 4 speed has a fairly tall top gear. and a tall diff gear. If it is a carb model, then the advance-retard mechanism on the dizzy could be knackered, the choke cable also can slip causing it to run on part choke and drink fuel at an alarming rate.

my 1 was a bit of a guzzler untill i noticed that the airbox was on winter setting. after changing it over to summer it was loads better.
don't know if it applies to a 1.2 though.

Thats just on 1L engines.

Milton-When you say it is guzzling petrol, how much exactly?
Have you worked out your MPG?

My nova 1.2i seems well good on fuel consumption.

I do about 70 miles on the motorway every day working for 4 days and i put about ?20 in per set of four. Works out about 55mpg

Both my 1.2's had a 4 speed box and would regularly return about 35-40mpg with mixed driving.

Fitting a 5spd box wont help much, unless your going flat out in 4th all day on the motorway.
I have a 4spd box in mine, and get about 35mpg.
