hi i was just wondering what the best type of performance disks and pads to buy are... i dont want to do the 16v conv as i dont have that much power i would jus like a nice setup that will make sure i stop as i am increasing my performance slightly
cheers

erm well there is fook all point in keeping the "std" sized nova breaks.
you cna never have too much braking ;) so if your wheels suit, get the 256mm ate calipers and discs
if your dead set on keeping to std nova sizes, then get the smallet ATE vented setup form the later GSI's and SRI's
get grooooved discs (tarox style is good) and decent pads like Ferodo DS2000's

oh lol  thanks for pointing that out! i did fail english  or i may of had a typing error
Gonna have to agree with stuart, if you want better brakes, you might as well get yourself some 16v ATE callipers and discs, but bear in mind you wont get standard Nova 14's on it without spacers.

so your saying i have to have 15's on to fit the 16v brakes is it jus buy the disks and calipers and they'll go straight on?
Yes - Its just a striaght swap. Take the metal back plate off as well. Thats the piece of metal thats behind and sightly bigger than the disc.
Old setup

Old disc

Disc and caliper off - Notice the back plate discarded in the background
At this point its a good idea to clean up the bit facing you. Also before putting the disc on just smear a light film of copper-slip on it.

Disc and first part of the caliper on.

Finished - Notice that the bleed nipple is pointing upwards.

Hope this helps. I always find piccys are alot easier to follow.

Is that jacked up under the oil sump :o lol
That reminds me, i must get my 256mm brakes fitted, when i cba
so your saying i have to have 15's on to fit the 16v brakes is it jus buy the disks and calipers and they'll go straight on? The discs and callipers do go straight on but you will need 15's to get over them. I believe you can use spacers to get the 14's over them but dont hold me to that one cos i have no experience of it

5.5J 14s fit
But most if not all nova steel 14s are 5J.
So you will need spacers, or grind some of the caliper off.
Just get some wider 14s, or 15s.

IIRC it rubs on the disk.
You can either seriously bend it out the way  , or cut it off.
I was thinking about leaving mine on to stop mud and s**t going onto the disk. :?

right im glad this post is up, its helped me loads!
my SR has been standing since around febuary so im going to put different breaks on.
should i try and shell out on brand new disc, calliper and pad set up from lmf, or should i just source a bargain for some second hand ones. cause i dont really want to spend ?220 on them :?
any one selling any!!

Mk3 astra gsi, cavalier gsi, mk2 astra gte.
Check for sale on here and Mig, usually a complete set going ready to fit for about ?40-?50.
SRlew-Get the calipers second hand, then just get new discs and pads, discs are about ?16 each, pads about ?12 for a set of 4.

Yes.
You would benefit from fitting a SRI/GSI/GTE/TD brake servo as its bigger than a 1.0/1.2/1.3 one meaning you wont have to work the pedal as much.
But the standard one will work.
