My car started cutting out last night, no warning just started cutting out.

If I start her up and hold the accelerator down as if taking her to 3000 revs, she dies, if I leave her to idle, she dies but if i repeatedly tap the accelerator she keeps running.

I have changed the plus leads, alternator two weeks ago, fuel filter.

I tried a different dizzy and coil, dizzy, didnt make any diff, so I put the old one back on then changed the coil, still no difference.

Does anyone have any ideas what is up with her before I go and buy a lighter and a few litres of petrol to torch her, well maybe only one given the cost of petrol these days.

Cheers

Had the same prob with my old Sr and it was the fuel pump

Does it do it when warm and cold? What engine is it?

It does it when it is hot and cold.

It is a 1.4SR.

Hmm, 1.4SR is auto choke afaik so could also be a problem with that, or possibly thermostat. Maybe some gunk in the carb and fuel filter, try a bit of redex/optimax...

Mine was a 1.4 sr j reg the fuel pump was working but not as it should so i put a inline filter on after the pump and it was ok for normal driving but when you pushed it it cut out so i replaced the pump ?10 quid or something and it was fine

I have sprayed carb cleaner into the carb and also replaced the inline fuel filter but still the same.

It has started doing it again.

If I put my foot to the floor it goes fine but as soon as I lift off at all, it starts juddering!!
So far I have replced the fuel filter, HT leads dizzy cap rotor arm, fuel pump, plugs.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing it.

I have used the car about 3 times since it last happened and have left it for the past 3 weeks, cause I couldnt be arsed with it, as my MOT is up next week, I need to fix it as quick as poss.

Cheers guys.

if it has the delco dizzy (the black one) check the advance mechanism by taking the vacuum pipe off from the carb end whilst it is running, and suck it, the engine note should alter. If it doesn't then it is shot, and your timing will be out.

You could have crap in your fuel tank, remember these cars are old now.

I have the red dizzy cap fitted

How easy would it be to fit a 1.6 from a K plate Astra into my nova.

It is a 1.6 8V, would my 4 branch from the 1.4 fit it, are the driveshafts the same?

Anything else that could cause a problem?

Cheers

it will be your timing
