Radio codes?

Hi, my friend has just got a cheap Vauxhall/Phillips car 400 radio cassette to put into his Corsa before he sells it, we plugged the connector and aerial lead into the back, it comes on but on digital display says "SAFE", i have got the four digit code, but i don't know how to enter the code for it to work? :?
Any help will be appreciated.

before you switch the stereo on HOLD in the AS button
then still holding it in turn stereo on and then it will bleep
use the number buttons to put in the code and then hold in AS again
and the stereo should be unlocked
