just been sorting out my rear bumper recently with a number plate recess as iv smoothed the boot. heres a few pics of progress.

^after measuring the number plate, i set too with stanley for a bit off cutting action, helped with an angle grinder as i got lazy!

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/tucny/S4010071.jpg
^ then i made a block out of mdf slightley bigger than then number plate (an imperssion of the recess)

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/tucny/S4010072.jpg
^this was sealed with polyester resin and smoothed

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/tucny/S4010073.jpg
^i then painted the block with 2k paint

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/tucny/S4010074.jpg
^coated with wax release agent and a nice thick coat of gel coat

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/tucny/S4010075.jpg
^after the gell coat, a few layers of medium weight glass fibre matting are applied. once dry this was pulled apart and shaped.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/tucny/S4010078.jpg
^a nice line of polyurethene bonder/sealer is applied to stick the recess in. all the surrounding plastic is keyed up to give the bonder and fiber glass a surface it can stick to.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/tucny/S4010076.jpg
^the recess in place on the reverse.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/tucny/recessrear2.jpg
^i then coated the rear of the recess with fibre glass and continued this to on to the bumper its self to bond it on securly

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/tucny/S4010079.jpg
^i applied some fibreglass filler paste to bond the gelled side with the keyed bumper

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/tucny/recess.jpg
^i then smoothed it all in properly with filler

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/tucny/noplatelight.jpg
^then i smoothed the old number plate light properly. the new recess has got holes cut out for new lights. i used fiat punto ones which clip in out of site. the metal bar has been cut to allow these and the recess to fit.

its now ready for a bit of fine surface filler, plastic primer, primer and paint.

anyone can do anything with practice. i took my car off the road years ago to tidy it up a bit, ended up teaching myself to weld, spray, laminate and now the whole things been rebuilt from scratch. trial and error and not been afraid to ask for advice from a professional works.
