my car wont start!

i have been told that it is the timing and have tried everything that i know. i have ligned the notches on the top cog up but then when looking at the bottom wheel i noticed that this also has a notch on it but where must this one line up with as i can find any other notches for it to match with???

i have tried putting the bottom one at what would be 6 oclock as i knwo the top one is at 12 but stil nothing

but everytime i turn the key all i get is a whirling sound and thts it!!!

is it the timing or does it seem to be something else!

please could someone help me as ive been on for days no trying to get this fixed and i need it done by like the weekend as my car needs to be moved!!

thanks for any help!!

Karl!

are you sure the belt is ok? they can strip teeth
if you set the cam pulley to 12 oclock & the crank pulley so the notch meets the pointer, the cam timing is fine. but the ignition timing could be out

where is the pointer though??

it seems as if i had nothing to line the bottom up with? and thats what i dont understand!?!?!?! :? :?

if my ignition timing is out how do i go about fixing that?

Is the engine actualy turning over or is it just the starter motor spinning :?

id guess that the cam is 180 degrees out of synch with the engine

no offence but if you cant fix the car with the manual then really what are you doing?.......

there should be a pin on the oil pump housing at the front of the engine, this will be aligned with the notch on the bottom pulley, you then line the cam pulley to 12oclock.

there you have it. one timed up engine

thank you!!!

i think my pin is missing but i have a hole so i shal try that!

what do i do if this stil doesnt work?

how do i know if my cams are wrong?

and im sorry that i cant fix my car with the manual!

ok remove the alternator pulley and look at tha crankshaft pulley

there will be an arrow on it

that arrow should be pointing streight down at the mark on the oil pump casing/timing belt cover

the cam pulley should be pointing streight up at the notch on the timing belt cover

check the timing belt tension is correct

refit the alternator pulley and tension it to the required torque

see if it starts

if not run a compression test as you've prolly mangled all the valves from having the timing away to fuck

im having the same sort of problem, i have managed to find the timing marks for the bottom pulley and cam so there ok but cant seem to do the ignition timing? i dont have a strobe light and now the starter is just clicking aswell and not turning over???? also the was a tiny second when a trickle of smoke came from the negitive terminal on the battery????? can anybody pls advise???????????????
im on a 12st engine with electronic ignition

1. charge the battery up.
2. if you have timed it up ok, then it is likely to be component failure.

have just had another look at car, turned over bottom pulley by hand, this has unseized the starter so thats ok for now,
i have polished up the alternator bracket to get a good earth on there, have tried to crank it over and there is still a small ammount of smoke released from the negative battery terminal???
any advise????
