View Full Version : help front speakers
hey i bought some front speakers, i was expecting for them just to bolt on, but i was wrong! how the hell do you fit them?? :o
Assuming they're to go in the dash, you'll need some very small hands :P
Alternatively you could fit them in the doors, but this will require cutting of the doorcard and drilling holes for the wires to go from car to door

Assuming they're to go in the dash, you'll need some very small hands :P and twig like fingers!!!!
if you mount them in the doors, make sure they wont interfere with either the window winder handles or the metal door stop which folds towards the door card when the doors closed.

go and check the ice section on this forum....seems to be a bit of a problem at present..
good luck.
yeah i mean in the dash, i can get my hands in but the isn't nothin to fit them too.
you think fitting them into the doors are easier?
mk1 or mk2 dash
as mk2 dash speakers arnt screwed in they just kinda twist in
lol yeah you may be a bit buggered then as if you look at the std speaker it had a little lip on it which just twists in a mould in the dash
and imo speakers in the doors look wank unless you make a proper pod for them
so what do you suggest to do with speakers? shall i just get 6 by 9's instead and leave the front?
it all depends what you want to do with your system but to be true a set of decent 6x9 would be far better even if there run of the head unit
well i was looking at piooner emotion speakers (ts-e6996)

Firstly get some decent 4 inch 3 way speakers . Remove the grill from the dash and unscrew the airvents screw which is underneath . Pull the air vent up slightly and then towards yourself - it should pop off. Push the air vents supply tunnel inwards and reach into the hole you now have ( small hands a must - if not watch yer knuckles ) and up to grab the rear of the orignal speaker. Twist it free and remove wires. Do this both sides of the dash . Now the really fiddley bit . Try to located the new speakers in the olds location ( dont worry about fixing em in yet ) and try to keep the speakers cone as clear from the cardboard edges .You may have to cut some carboard away be careful and cut only small amounts remember the old carpenters words - measure twice and cut only once , this will give the speaker room to vibrate and not touch the cardboard. If you manage to do this ok , then mark the where the speakers frame holes are underneath the cardboard ( mine were at 12 and 3 and 6 o,clock ) then remove the speaker Using a bradle make holes where youve marked and thread zip ties thru ( you,ll use these to hold the speaker in place , dont worry if you cant put all 4 in , just carefully bend the edge of the speakers frame up to mate up with the cardboad edging . I then stuck a lump of sponge on the rear of the speakers magnet , as to aid a good tight fit ,as its near the bulkhead , slide the speaker in nearly into its new location and try to thread the zip ties into the speakers frame holes and reconnect the speakers cables . Once you are happy that the speakers in its location and the speaker is free to vibrate and not touch the cardboard at all tighten the zip ties cut of the excess . Then replace the air vent tunnel ( may need a slight push ) onto the airvents front , screw in and replace the grill . A real fiddley job , but worth it - and nobody would know you,ve half good speakers hidden away there . Oh , and slap a pair of 6x9s on the parcel shelf...I did this last November and I lost a knuckle or 2 but the sounds are well worth it. If youre still unsure treat yourself to a Nova Haynes manual - this will help .The choice is yours .Good luck
cheers, excellent help, i will give that ago. my worry was not on the passenger but the drivers side, you think 3 screws on the rubbis carboard will do??

Should be ok if theres enough of the cardboard left to bind up to. The only reason I used zip ties was for the ease of fitting , I must admit , I was concerned about this fixing method , but theres been no problems in the last 2 years and my speakers at 150w jobbies are quite heavy , but havent come loose or the zip ties tearing thru the cardboard. Good luck.
yeah i will get a haynes manual first, i will let you know how i get on
finally done. i finally got the speakers in after a loss of alot of blood.
cheers for the help and info, very please they are in now

Nice one mate - its a pig of a job but in my mind well worth the effort of using the old dash location ( apart from not being visible , I think it sounds better ) as no drillings needed like when doing door type mounts. I,ve recently slapped a pair of speakers in wifeys motor ( doors ) using the same stereo and amp as mine and it doesnt sound half as good as the nova, mind you it could be just her taste in music.....
lol, yeah really stressed me out getting them in, i was ready to take them back and just get some new back speakers but now they are in im really pleased in the quality and where they are placed. (ear level)
just need to get back speakers now!! any recomendations

I,d go for pioneers 6 x 9s- better bass response - there were a few sets kickin round on ebay , for ?30+ ,in fact I slapped a pair in the back of wifeys just last week -240watters. One thing to remember , your head unit ( cd player ) wont push your speakers that much - the internal amps arent that powerful and are rated at peak power ( distortion ) so in reality the 45watts per channel most head units claim is probably at most 18-20watts per channel - the head unit just cannot push good bass . . There is how ever an easy option to pump up the performance . Sony do a small 220watt amp that runs in tandem with your head unit and doesnt need to be hard wired via the battery , it plugs straight onto your current iso connectors and thats it !! So the powers now about 180watts peak + 220 watts peak = 400 or so , in reality I,d say around 180 ,190watts max - more than enough for me . I grabbed one of ebay for ? 30 wired it in ( only needed to pop the cd player out of its cradle ) then hid this small amp on the drivers side shelf. I,m well pleased with its performance , its loud enough , and was a cheap and easy option . Take a look on ebay - you may get lucky...
good luck

Couldnt agree more mate - the pioneer quality is steadfast - I,m running Pioneers speakers entirely . The Sony amp - brought brand new ?39.99 was a supereb investment , and compliments the entire system . The next system I,ll install ( another bigger car mybe next summer if funds are ok ) will be a monster , but for now I,m happy and the tinitus has,nt gotten any worse yet ........
