so much fun with nova, working fine then suddenly doesnt, brilliant ay!

car has been fine for ages, twin 40's serving me well. got into the car today to go to work, turned the key heard a very tiny weak crank then nothing. battery meter on dash reading good. so i try again, nothing.
tried to jump it from my mates car, same crap, no crank.

it was fine yesterday no problems, started it about 3/4 times in total, fired up 1st time everytime.

i have had a brief look at the starter motor, all connections appear to be on, quite hard looking down there with 2 fat carbs in the way!

any ideas, or is it that my starter motor is knackered!!

cheers as always

the solenoid might have seized, try rocking the car in gear to free it off, then try starting it, if this works you'll be looking at a new starter

gearbox earth strap?

try a jump lead between battery negative and the block

More likely th eearth to the starter has broken/corroded.

Mine did that, and randomly didnt work!

only 92> had starter earth

everything before that just earthed thru the gearbox

either way the battery to engine earth is a possilbe candidate for these problems so check that out first

i tried the rocking it in gear thinking, moved it forward a bit engine defintaley turned around. same shite, little attempt at turning then nothing, im thinking it could be the earthing because i have problems starting it when its hot. wheres the best place to fit a new strap. i will be using thick mains wire, that should be ok?

cheers

Do as Aragorn says, put a jump lead from neg batt terminal to the block, and then try and start it, as that will serve as a better earth.
Then you will know for sure its an earth problem.

and thick mains wire isnt really big enough

u want some 25mm2 cable that can handle the type of current that a starter pulls

halfords sell some pre-made earthstraps ttaht would work fine

tried, didnt work, so jump started, was fine, after stoping, turned her off and tried to start by key, nothing, only a little 1/16 turn then nothing again.

im thinking starters gone, cant easily see it cos the 40's are int he way!

cud still be earthing? but i tried earthing block to battery to loads places, still nuthing!
