to let all the hot engine fumes out through the scuttle pannel and the 6-9 inches is left for the wiper motor to bolt to, its a good idea but your heaters become very hot and smelly!

mainly done to increase airflow to twin carbs

i saw an auto grass nova that had this removed with a metro carb that was sitting just beneith the scuttle panel. as said, it seemed as if this was all down to air flow.

Yeh i have done this aswell. I did it mostly to make the bay look better and get lower underbonnet temps!! But the down side is that i have a oil catch tank that vents off into the engine bay lol!! So its rather smelly in the cabin.

I have used a feista wiper motor braket insted of curring up the nova one!!
