Bear in mind aftermarket kits will more than likely raise your insurance... You'd probably be able to get away with SR/GTE/GSi bumpers at little or no extra cost though.

Well it varies from company to company, but usually anything that either increases the performance (power, handling, etc) or desirability (attraction to theives) of the car will increase the premium.

So adding spangly bodykits and styling parts that make the car look nicer or stand out, will attract the attention of thieves and thus make your car more likely to get broken into, which in turn means the insurance company are more likely to have to pay out. Result: higher premium for you due to greater risk.

Although you could argue that parts from other novas (eg. GTE alloys, SR bumpers etc) are standard parts, think of it this way - if you were a thief and you saw a line of standard 1.2 merits parked up with what appeared to be a GSi in the middle, which would you try to steal?

I'd go for the merits, if they were rust-free!!!!!!!!

Mate, just SR it and stick a set of those black and silver steels like the ones you get on the SRis on it and play dumb. In fairness its hardly worth mentioning, i mean after all, define Modified? Just dont put SRi badges on it.

I work in car insurance and if you mod your car you are a DICK if you dont declare mods!

2 reasons -

1 if you have a smash then your insurance is null and void
2 if your insurance is voided and someon is injured youre GOING DOWN! (or will at least get banned!)

As for prices - Styling mods that "enhance a car" like body kits are rated differently depending on the insurer. rice depends on the insurers rating factors which look at your age, claims, convictions, post code, the car, the "theftability", the desirability for theft, the security, the mods etc...

On older cars like novas it makes no difference which kit you put on because as soon as the cars in a collission its an auto write off - even for a small ding - the reason is that it costs more to get the car towed to the garage, for an assessor to look at damage and for them to fix it. Its quicker and cheaper to pay the value of the car (now a days less that ?1k depending on condition). A mate of mine dinged his Nova - dented the wingm broke the light, cracked bumper and dinged the bonnet - car was fine except for this (small bump - someone reversed into him). They wrote it off and gave him ?1200. He bought car back from them (as they own the car once written off) and got replacement parts for ?50!

Also - depending on the kit, prices can be higher - simply because if they do fix it, they need to source the kit quickly and cheaply.

So, if youre going to mod the styling aspect of the car go for GSi/GTE look. You'll be using Nova specific parts and your insurance wont really change - that much (this dependin on your age and your claims / convictions though)

AND TELL THE INSURANCE!

saves hastle in future - just incase

with the c.i.s, i phoned them up an declared that i had my bodykit in alloys, but they said that they were only looking for 'performing enhancing modifications' that would effect your premium, so the exhaust should boost it up 50-100 depending on who, ind. kit hardly. mind declare anythin like tinted windows, or lowering springs etc etc.....

^ GET THAT IN WRITING

ESPECIALLY from CIS!

That's exactly what they said to me before I fitted my bodykit. Ok I thought, no problem; fitted the bodykit, renewed my insurance, gave them a quick note with pics to show the work I'd done as a visual reference (as their agent advised).

Week later, letter drops through the door. "You owe us ?75 as we have upped your car to a Group 6 (from group 4) due to the bodywork modifications. Please pay Yesterday"

Went to see the agent at the local office, he said there's bugger all they can do and I'll have to pay. He wasn't shifting, so we rang the underwriter directly and explained the situation. Their response was that "CIS have been told repeatedly that body modifications DO increase your premium". The underwriter let me off this time, but said next time we renewed I'd have the pay the additional premium.

(Went with HIC after that and had my mods covered for free and the car valued at ?1500 - and yes, they paid ?750 to cover the repairs when it got pranged :D)

Moral of the story is - if you want to stay with CIS, then get their statement of body mods being ok in writing so you have something to go back on if they then get tol to charge you more. Oh, and bear in mind they won't pay any extra to cover your modifications - i.e. if you write the car off, they'll just pay you the market value of the base car, where as HIC obviously paid me extra to cover my mods when I claimed.

23, no claims, convictions or previous driving experience, insurance in a 1.2i Vauxhall Nova, e3500. which works out around 2200STG. And if i fit Alloys, the car in uninsurable. What the fuck? What if the car came with alloys, still doesn't matter. I'd have to swap the wheels for Steels, is that not modifing?

Its a totally different thing over here and it is Shit. If i turn my car into a van it'll cost me e1500 less, but is that not classed as modifying it?

Just as well i dont drive the Nova then, the Fiesta shit box'll have to do!!

Any insurance companys over there cover people over here? Lets face it, we need some help!!!
