can you change the heater matrix without taking out the full dash is it possable to change just by removing bottom half

yup... 4 bolts on the bottom

I did one o them before, u drop the 4bolts on the bottom and take off the cover, then u need to disconnect the 2 flow pipes in the engine bay that supply the water thru the bulkhead, then pull the matrix (looks like a mini rad) down and towards the back of the car, its more awkward to get the new one in for some reason as it catches on the bar for the brake pedal lol, but it can be done jus take your time or ul break it and need another one like i did lol!!!!
Then its a wiggle and faff job to put the cover bk on!!!

and when you re fit, make sure the heater is set to hot, or youll get a hoofing air lock in the water system.
