Hi all,

Been thinking about getting some slicks for track days and strip action - I've seen a fair few on various sites but the sizes are recorded differently than normal road tyres.

If I want the equivalent of a 195/45 x 16" tyre what size slick do I need or will I be better of with a 15" rim size???

See this as an example:

15" slicks (or rather cut slicks as some track days wont let you run with full slicks) are a more "available" size, which means they should be cheaper.

id look at the yoko A048 as its a decent price, but ive yet to test them lol and they come in road tyre sizes which makes looking about easier....

I'm not sure if it isn't taking quite a big risk buying used track rubber esp full slicks.

1. If they are used and being sold off cheap whats wrong with them? Flat spots and blisters will shake your car to bits with the vibration that they can cause and make it undriveable.

2. Will they fit - esp. for Novas? Slicks have really firm straight tyre walls & a much more pronounced sharp shoulder of rubber around the edges which will cause more problems with rubbing than similar sized road tyres. The side walls are taller as well - they don't have the lowered rounded profile of a road tyre.

3. What compound are they? Hard compounds fitted to the rear of a stripped out nova will be a nightmare as they will probably never get hot enough quick enough to work any sense. Cold slicks = exits into the kitty litter without warning!

Best to get advice from someone involved in motorsport or a specialist motorsport supplier before shelling out for what might be totally inappropriate.

I have Dunlop 185/580 R15 's fitted to mine and they just fit under the arches which have been cut back so there is no lip with only a tiny amount of scrubbage. There is a small amount of scrubbage at the front on max lock against the inner wings as well.

The spec for mine are : Opt wheel rim 7". Diameter 583mm. Overall width 205mm. Tread width 185mm. Revolutions/mile 878

I looked up the specs for 16" rims. The narrowest ones were over 10mm wider than mine. If you want bigger best fit wide arch kit and go to 17"s?

the slicks i have been using ar 19/56/15 and they rub everywhere, lol. i've modded my rear arches(inner and outer) so they will fit. on the + side they are quiet cheap and easy to come by
