Well i took the Clio for its MOT today, fully expecting it to pass and it failed on:

- emissions - needs new cat (?180)
- O/S Driveshaft boot split
- O/S Handbrake not working

And for some reason, they quoted me ?230 inc. labour for just fixing the driveshaft boot and rear handbrake!!! Im sorting the cat out myself tommorrow, but how the hell they got that quote i dont know! Gonna sort the handbrake myself as well tommorrow to get the prices down a bit :o

You may have to strip the inner cv joint down in order to change the outer boot, I remember renault 19's being this way, and on almost every one the daft inner tripoid used to fall apart as you removed the shaft from the box, meaning gearbox rebuild time :!:

when taking the driveshafts out do one then stick a broom handle in that one to hold it all in place then pull the other out i cant remeber which one has to come out first it also depends on engine what will happen

Ahh brings back memories of my mates clio. Bloody expensive parts and a ballache to work on. The gearbox is a ballache to change so make sure you do that seperatly or u really will lose it with ur car.

Im not even going to try and do the gearbox myself mate, because its a 1.8 16v, the engine and gearbox both have to come out, and then be separated apparently, so im just going to get a garage to do it for me..

lol
my g/f had a 106 gti was a pain in the arse to work on as the engine took up 99% of the engine bay

so to do any work on the car's engine you had to remove a fair few bits to get at what you needed to!
