Hey guys n gals,

I just downloaded a 60 odd meg MP3 thru audiogalaxy and the f***ing thing has saved to my PC as a .temp file. I have tried going to the rename option and deleting the temp section of the name but to no avail.

any ideas on how i can get this file into MP3 format or do i have to d/l it again? It will play as it is, its just that i cant get a cd burner application to recognise it as a music file.

ta muchly

Phil

it converts the files to normal mp3's when its completed em. you can set winamp to play the .tmp files :) and it plays just like an mp3, jsut dont change the names coz AG wont be able to complete them

goto a dos window (start menu->programs->MS DOS Prompt)
go to the directory your downloaded file is in (you'll have to type it manually i.e. c://folder/ )
type the following:

rename *.temp *.mp3

job jobbed

As Cambridge said... but to get the mp3 format just copy the file to somewhere else I.E. desktop and right click, take out the .temp and put .mp3 hey presto :)

thanx guys,

its not a winamp issue that i was trying to resove here tho - the fact that it was a .tmp meant that the cd writer wouldnt recognise it as audio and threw up a file type error....

is sorted now thx to stokie dave, and to the rest of you for throwing your help in

well how come i can do it then?

Stokie Dave

must be becuz u download files called xxx.temp but u dont notice they dont have an actual file extension (i.e. right click->properties and the file type will say 'file').. so u can rename to xxx.mp3 and the extension is then added from the mp3 bit

if u know wot i mean :)

That is the ONLY way such a trick wud work. It wont work for audiogalaxy files which are downloaded as woteva.mp3.temp (note the .temp @ the end) as the temp is the file extension, so u have to re-write the extension via dos. init :)

they are called "filename.mp3.temp" right click em and rename, take out the temp and leave .mp3. Thats what i do.

erm, hate to piss on anyone fire, but it will work in all os's from the right-click menu, all you need t do in any explorer window, is go to tools --> folder options and in the view tab, de-select "hide file extensions of known file types" and hey presto the file tune.mp3.temp can be renamed to tune.mp3 by deleting the .temp, as now windows knows you are playing with the extension, and the stokie dave way is right too, but to be honest its easier to point and click :D

(I have just checked this on the following os's 98, 98se, me, 2k pro and server, and xp pro and advancedserver)
