i got my car back after getting the haed gasket done! while it was in i got a full headset put on it , cam belt and tensioners , water pump , inlet port cleaned , injectors cleaned , and a service ! ever since it seems to tick over at between 12,00 and 15,000 rpmthen sudenly drops to ten then strait back up and sits where it was

i have searched for air leaks but it seems fine and its driving me mental anyone have any ideas as to what it could be?

15000 RPM is alot for a car...

did you mean 1500?

Is there some sort of idle control valve not doing its job correctly?

Hello
Could be a air leek or idle control valve or throttle sensor .

There is a way to clean it, but iv forgottten since its been a while since my dad had his old cav

http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/Images-Parts/IdleAirValve.gif

looks like that if its the same as my dads had, should be around the inlet i think

yep, it was that bugger on my old cavvy, next time its hunting, give it a whack with a spanner or something and see if it stops, mine was getting stuck and that confirmed it.

My dad used to blow down it to unblock it lol, also used some sort of lube like WD40

no nova engine has an ICV like that

if its a late model GSi theres prolly an ICV in the throttle body (black thing)

if its an early GSi with AFM then theres not really a ICV, just a secondary air valve which could be sticking open
