View Full Version : Speed cameras & lines on the road

There's a few truvelo speed cameras (http://www.speedcamerasuk.com/Truvelo.htm) round my way, and several more being put up. On the existing ones, new white lines have been painted after the camera.

I took some pics to clarify what I am talking about.

Here you can see the three lines on the left which will trigger the camera (when it's built) and the lines they have painted after the camera on the right.

Anybody have any ideas what they're for?

the lines are for working out your speed. They will have them on both side so they have the choice of which way the camera can face. Im guessing thats whats going on

thats the distance cameras clock u over. from the beginnin to end of the lines there are sensors that clock you time taken to go through that period and then works out whether or not you're speeding

Same as above though the ones near me are just Two white lines on iether side of the cam and they turn it round when they feel like it.

Lines are for manually working out your speed so you can't argue that the camera wasn't correctly adjusted when it snapped you.

Truvelo is supposed to combat the main flaw with the Gatso, in that its forward facing and doesn't flash (well it does, but with IR).

Seen a few PEEK cameras appear in cheltenham by traffic lights... and a couple of SPECS ones too up round there (which supposedly have trouble reading square number plates...)

Oh, and this (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/shropshire/4559173.stm) is interesting too

yea i heard of that one, my dad mentioned it to a copper when he got stopped the other week lol...

and he let him off lol

you can still argue that the camer is inaccurate as the time bewteen the pics is supposed to be X time, but that could be shorter. which would indicate that you were speeding.

the truvelos can be used as gatsos. there are a few on the A1 that have been turned round to get you like a traditional gatso

we dont have anything like that around here! cant be doing with them. The only speed camera type things round here are the detection vans.

Yeah those are the ones, near to where they have two sets on University Boulevard. You're right, the bastards are popping up everywhere.

It seems sensible that they're there for clocking some speed some how, but there are new lines painted after existing Truvelo cameras, ie not in the view of the camera. I fail to see the benefit of them changing the Truvelo to Gatso cameras ('cause they don't get your face).

AFAIK Gatsos are a lot cheaper to buy, install and use

Don't think the Truvelo ones are that great as they only get you when you speed over the three white lines in the road but by the time you reach these you are practically level with the camera and deserve to be caught for not being aware of your surroundings.

cant be caught over 155mph let the lesson be learnt

Jack

SPECS and laser will, and so will Truvelo - it only takes one picture

I think we need to test the 155mph theory... Didn't they have that on top gear? Get me a long enough stretch of the M5 and I'll have a go

^ Digital Gatsos aren't just in Bristol, I've seen them used in various places around Somerset - there's a couple in the Taunton area...

yes they did a test on top gear once. i believe they used a tvr tuscan at about 170 and the camera was too slow lol

A gatso and Truvelo has to be calibrated every 3 days and if you get caught speeding you can ask for a certifcate to confim this also the speed at which you get away is around 167-168 also it is said only 130 of them at a time are ever active due to low funds.

In some 30mph zones in Kent the fixed penalty only comes in above 45mph and only if someone drives over 57mph will they be taken to court

this is a certifcate

That bin gatso can't seriously be used? Maybe if they painted the bin yellow... :P

That 57mph thing sounds about right. According to research I have done, fixed penalties go up to 25 mph above the legal limit and court/ban thereafter.

I have also read (off an official website) that the "10% + 2" rule should be used by cops. Not sure if cameras will take that in to account though.

I've gone thru a couple of 30mph Gatso's at approaching 40 (in my defence I didn't realise the speed limit) and they didn't go off... Also driven towards some at about 45 and they've gone off

that bin one shouldnt be allowed, dont they have to be clearly visible (not the bin), and anyway whos gonna stop to go slow past a bin?

Was talking to my mate about this last night, he got nicked for doing 52 in a 30 zone and got a court summons (result: 6 points and ?300 fine).

Apparently the copper said to him if he was doing 3mph less (i.e. 49mph) he could have gotten away with a standard ?60 and 3 points.

I guess it could vary between constabularies as to what speeds get what penalties....

...and I think the bin one was a piss take :P

Yeah that's a pretty nice idea, it's been on the news. Might get outdated a bit quick at the rate they're putting them up though.

Jack
27-06-05, 09:34 PM
lmfao thats a bit pointless as yeah it will go out of date too quick, won't list mobile sites, and... all the data is already available on the net from each police force lmfao
