if i understand right, your on about the plastic on the body,
right some are bolted on,some aint.if it a hard plastic its a bolt on job,it its a softer more rubbery thing then you should be able to pull it off with the use of a hair dryer with out any paint going.
mk2 had the rubber ones (thick with a colour running along the middle. Mk1 had hard plastic with grooves running along (clips). Be careful when removing them - v hot soapy water water will help, start from front wing (angled bit) and go v slowly, curling a bit at a time - will come off eventually - once off wont be able to use again (they curl up and knacker) and they are not cheap to replace so if removing make sure its wot u want to do.

ive got a mk 1 sr (f reg) just pull them off, i pushed a hair dryer in when pulling them off so the hot air helped melt the sticky as i gently pulled. Thing is if youve got side vinyl going down from the strips it pulls up the vinyl at the same time, leaving a tatty line, paint many also be brigher underneath cos it hasnt been left exposed, thats all ok if your taking off the side vinyl as well and getting a respray!
ribber ones? hmmm - me thinks I;ve been misinformed (:'>) sorry lad - good news spose cos theyre easy to remove without worrying about clips left behind!

probley to late coz ya probley done it already, but might help some1 else.
right i had nowt to do at work,so i rang the dealer down the road(the excuse was to get rid of the part x we hard).so here goes.
RUBBER:was fitted to higher end novas and the later novas ,86 onwards.though some wee fitted with plastic as some dealers were deleverd with there cars in factory condition, hence no bump strips.
plastic was fitted to VERY earlyer cars, but as i sed some later ones did have them, but very few did.
the rubber ones should NOT pull the paint off,and they do not knackerd if they are pulled off,all you do is put them in warm soapy water and leave them,it work for me,i left them in there for about a year, not joking, but the g.f thought she help clear the garage out,so they started curling,IF they do,warm them with the hair dryer bend them back into shape and chuck em in hot water.
oh yeh an cheapist i found new was 100 quid yes ouchand vinal is 200,so b sure u wanna do it,coz it could cost more than the cars worth
