View Full Version : wharfedale 10" sub
My local Maplins is flogging a wharfedale 10" sub for ?39. I only have 2 x 6x9's (at the mo) and was wondering whether it is worth picking this sub up. My 6x9's are suffering a little under excessive bass & volume (I think one of them has gone making nasty crackling sounds) so need something to help with the bass. I'm not after ultimate ice at the moment. Will I need an AMP? I have a kenwood kdcc660 head unit with disc changer. Will my head unit be able to cope without an amp?
I also no f'all about ice!

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal labotamy!

as its a wharfdale your looking at it being for home entertainment not in car so its frequency range and ohm impedence being wrong. i would look for a decent sub in box you could pick up a decent kenwood sub in box for bout ?50-?60, also you will need a Amp if you want to even start to shake the sub, you could get a half decent sounding sub and amp for bout ?120 if you looked hard enough!!
It's fairly easy to correct the impedance mis-match . a few parallel resistors should do it, frequency range difference is negligable .. but you WILL need an amp! You can pick up a dirt cheap amp from around ?30 that should do the job... it's unlikely that you've cracked your 6*9's if you don't have an amp .. a head unit alone doesn't normally kick out enough power to blow a decent 6*9. what may be the issue is that if you've been running your head unit on full volume for a long period of time you could of melted the coils in the speaker!! (the coils try and pull more power out than they are getting and so vibrate intensly which causes them to eventually melt!).
Hope this is of some use!
