mountings are 9mm bar (can get away with 10 but its a squeeze) and use a router to remove about 1-2mm in a sqaure around the speakers then put 1/2" mesh over them so you dont damage em if stuff is put on top.

use 44mm pine to make the rails to make it look "normal"

cover, Job done

BEng (hons) just isnt enough, i need a Msc too!

if you want to keep your original parcel shelf but reinforce it, have a look at www.novamad.co.uk - theres a "stealth shelf" mod. basically attach a peice of thin mdf to the underside of the existing parcel shelf n bolt speakers to it from underneath. Sandwich mesh inbetween shelf and mdf holes where speakers go to protect them, cover shelf in accoustic carpet for invisible look and bobs yer aunties live in lover.
Suprised your parcel shelf is rattling - sure its not yer back seats - usually them. If shelf, locate rattle and wrap felt/foam around offending area.

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal labotamy!

I stopped my parcel shelf rattling by putting a single layer of electrical insulation tape around the hinges and on the rear mounts.
