Hmm, slipping.
Could be alternator belt

But that wouldn't explain it cutting out?

Or even the cambelt? that would explain the cutting out.
I would check the cambelt is in tact

I had a cambelt go on starting the engine once, pulled the top of the cover back, though that looks ok, then took the cover off properly and the belt had stripped its teeth off at the bottom pulley, killed a couple of valves by continuing to try starting it before I'd had a good look.

does sound horribly like cambelt. Maybe slipped a few teeth or something.

Check the belt before you try and start the engine again.
Could cause more damage than may have already been done.

Yeah i would get the belt covers off.
But the damage may have already been done if the belt has slipped/snapped.

New belt-think about ?10 for just the belt.
And it depends on what damage may have been caused, may need new valve(s)/piston etc
Have to take the head off and have a look if anything is bent.

First thing to do, is take the cambelt cover off and see if the belt has stripped a few teeth, or snapped.
Then go from there.

Depends entirely on how good you are with the spanners and what tools you have avaliable to you. If i were you id get hold of a haynes manual and have alook through it mate, see if your up to the job.

Where?
in the oil filler cap?

If its head gasket, then you will need split the engine in half to replace the gasket, and may need the head skimming, depending how long its been like that.

Skimming is about ?30, you may not need it done. It depends if the head has warped any.
You will need new headbolts, head gasket etc.

Look in Haynes manual, it tells you everything in there

You also want to make sure that it is the head gasket!
How bad is the white gunge? You can sometimes get a build up on condensation if you don't use the car much or do short journeys.
