You could always use thinner perspex and use a few sheets to build up the thickness.
As long as you secure it well enough so it don't rattle it should be fine.

TunaFish is the way forward... you mark my words. :D

its all down to the density of the material. Perspex is light and should be ok, like wisewood says. It needs to be fastened well. If you layer it and then cut holes for speakers, you need to make sure that the hole edges are sealed (sealer) to stop vibration from speakers. MDF is cheaper and is also made up of layers. Its also dense making it a little heavier and a good at sealing in sound. Dont need it too thick and dont need to worry about sealing edges where holes are cut.
It all depends on what u intend to do. Personally I'd go with MDF. If u intend to make yer boot into a big bas speaker, line it with sound deadening material (flashing tape).

ply is made of lots of layers NOT mdf!!!

i wouldnt recomend using perspex for the whole shelf, due to the fact that you would need a very very thick piece to get it stable enough.

BEng (hons) just isnt enough, i need a Msc too!

Perspex is very expensive,i use it at work alot,u would need probably 8mm,or above, but like i said is costly, the same with acrylics!,i'd go for mdf, but cut a small rectangle out of it and put in a small chunk of perspex, say 3-5mm,and put a trick neon under it! ;)

oh now that sounds cool! get one of them spinning round sparkey things mounted in yer back shelf - weird! u can wire them up to sound apparantly so they dance all over the place - look well weird going down the road!
