Need help on ice. Local autoshop just bamboozled me with preamps, rca's, etc.etc and gave me a quote for ?600 for new system (I'm supplying some of speakers too!) not inc fitting!
I need someone to help me put a system together that will not break the bank, will give me good bass/overall sound using the following existing components - (dont really wanna get new ones if I can help it)

Current Head unitKenwood KRC - 358RA cassette receiver
Max output 30w x 4
output power (din 45324, +B=14.4v) 20w x 4
Bass 100Hz +- 10dB
Treble 10kHz +- 10dB
Preout level / load 1500mV / 10ohms
Preout impendence <= 600ohms
Head driving Kenwood KDCC 660 6 disc autochanger

Front speakers (not yet fitted)
Kenwood KFC-1768s 170mm 2 way speakers
Peak power 140w
Rated power 35w
Freq resp 30Hz - 22,000Hz
Sensitivity 92dB / W @ 1m
Impendance 4ohms

Rear speakers
pioneer 6x9's
not working though (bad crackle when bassy music goes through them)
----------------
I need new 6x9's for rear. what can I use?
Do I need an amp? what type?
Is my existing head ok?
What else do I need? (sub?)

----------------
I want the system to sound good but not blow out my windows. Want good quality bass but not boom boom with good midrange (music taste ranges from prodigy, dance, new order, Ian Brown to radio 4!) -
----------------
Guy in the auto sound shop suggested running current speakers off existing head, then run new 6x9's off amp (suggested pioneer TS 300w ones). Then he suggested getting bigger head with 4 preouts at 50w to run fronts and amp to run rears with rca blah blah blah - that lost me...
----------------
Bit of a challenge for you icers!!!

E-mail me advice or post.

basically.....the head unit is a tad week....altho it sounds ok....u want something with at least 40x4..the front speakers are fine...6x9 sound like they are blown.....get your self some pioneer 6x9 as much watts as u can...and run them from an amp..obviously..halfords have got a lightning audio amp for 79.99 will do it fine and it looks fappin wikid...why not a sub?? 6x9 speakers on a stealth shelf or similar will do fine for good treble and bass..make sure it doesnt rattle tho..make sure all wiring is the oxygen free stuff for quality sound(hi-fi store(richer sound))does mint stuff...stops distortion and try and use that dynamix stuff from halfords stops distortion to..use that in doors... so in the end what have u spent.....79.99 for an amp.....say 60squidos for some good 6x9(or ive got some alpines for sale for 30sqiudos brand spankers) and some wires about 20squidos...so it dont break the bank does it....dunno if thats any help...but use the stuff youve got it saves money and when its complete and sounds good..u can just keep upgrading it ...

I would change the frot speakers, i had these ones and changed them for a component system and i noticed a big diference, more sound quality and more bass (and the pair of tweeters in the dashboard, much better than coaxial speakers) and i'd amp the front speakers or buy a 4 channel amp cos if you amp the rear ones the music will come from the rear or the car, i say this cos this is what happened to me, now i have the front speakers and a sub with an amp and the rears with the head unit and sounds nice and the music comes from the front of the car.. my english again.. sorry

My head unit is a Kenny 4x30 too, the amp is 4x40 rms

?600's a right rip off mate, specially if it dont include fittin or anythin else, stay away from them ! 4 x 30w is quite a weak output by today's standard . Id recommend at least a 4 x 40w CD tuner, much better, and tapes are a pain in the ass to rewind \ ffwd all the time !

My set up blows my ears off and makes everythin rattle turned up really loud, it sounds wicked as you like though and still very bassy turned down to a minimum .

I have one large JBL sub wired into an alpine amp . You dont need a fancy amp really, just somethin powerful enough to amplify your sub (i have a small alpine one).
Id then wire 6x9's (Get Kenwood's) to your new head unit (unless you can afford a 'twin channel amp' in which case you can have both 6x9's and sub through it) . Once theyre all connected up right, you get superb sound quality, you'll love it .

Hope that helps a bit mate and aint too confusing . its def. the set-up id go for :)

just got back from ripspeed (they have an outlet at local Halfords in Glasgow) - talking to the sound guy there who recommended a Dragster amp (DA602) (?80 reduced from ?120) and a set of infinity 6x9 300w (?100. He reckoned running the Kenwood front speakers off the existing head (until I can afford to another one) and new 6x9's off amp will be fine for what I'm looking for - so took him up on his recommendations. Decided against a sub but have option to add one later if necessary. Also picked up a wiring kit with top range oxygen free cables, fuses etc. It wont be installed till after I've rebuilt me car anyway - I'm just gathering parts at the mo. Back room in he house is like a parts store - birds going mad! :p
My existing knackered 6x9 has a nice piece of gaffer tape over part of it which takes away the crackle when its bass ey but strangely does not distord the sound at all :-/ ;) - weird.
Thanks for yer advice anyway
(and so the barclaycard bill continues to grow...)
