Hi Mike,

If your making the tailgate removable you could just use 4 bonnet pins. Two at the top and two at the bottom. That way its held on firm. The spring clips will allow some movement and could crack the fibreglass around the bonnet pins at the top.

Is there a reason why you are making it removable?

Cheers

i just got the spring clips because i thought i needed them, its no problem i'll get some more bonnet pins, i wasn't intentionally planning on making it removable lol

cheers darren

Would you like me to put some photos up of how i've done mine? Its not removable though. Also did yours come with captive nuts for the hindges?

Mike.

iff you could mate, yeah it has the captive nuts

lol. Just looks standard. I suppose because it basically is. Anyhoo as you can see all I have done is mounted the hindges as normal using the captive nuts on the tailgate and also mounted the catch as normal. Dunno if this helps at all. :?

Is the boot lid strong enough to be hinged, no chance of it cracking or anything?

Mike.

i see what you mean with the hinges dar, the catch was a good idea, i might put the catch on mine, then put the bonnet pins on, make sure its secure lol

doesn't look to bad detachable,

iff it was detachable, i'm guessing it would vibrate alot, or i could adjust the bonnet pins holding it on

If you hold it on with bonnet pins. Im sure that you could adjust them up so that it dosen't rattle, and yes it looks cool as well. :P

my steel (but cut down to fcuk) boot lid will be held on with bonnet pis and the spring clips (no fear of it cracking)

although from a security stand point i might get another set of bonnet pins so i can padlock the boot on lol

my fibreglass boot comes off in 1.
TBH i prefer one with hinges like darren's, no way of damaging it then and its hassle when you need to get in the back for something. I just haven't got round to making some hinges for mine yet.

Have you bought the tailgate?

www.eurorallye.co.uk do ones that come with captiv nuts installed. ;)

i have the tailgate, its sat in my garage now, it has the captive nuts in it, i've decided i will hinge it from the top using the original hinges then clamp it down with the bonnet pins

How much and where'd you cut? I've a few spare tail gates, fancy trying to lighten one for my own car.

i took out the wiper motor and literally cut all the steel off that inside part where the catch bolts to and the wiper motor (ill try to dig out some pics)

it weighs 7Kg without the polycarb, not sure what it will weigh with it in as ive not got it yet.

also i cut the hinges off, took the spoiler off etc and the 1/2" thick layer of filler in the recess (factory filler btw)

not sure what the GRP one weighs
