Hi

I have a '85 1.2 which idles really badly. It doesn't idle fast, but sorta bumps and judders and sounds like it wants to cut out. It starts from cold ok, but doesnt like staying started, if that makes sense! :P

I hope you can understand what i'm talking about, its hard to describe whats happening!

Plugs, dizzy and rotor have been changed. I was thinking could it be the timing, And if so how much does it cost to be checked/put right?

Timing would definately be a good thing to get checked/setup properly.

TBH, the 1.2 carb's (pierburg) are really aweful and it should run a lot better if you get a weber 32/34 dtml. They're on ebay alot and also on the for sale forums on here occasionally.

The 1.2s have a different pierburg to the 1300/1400SR tho, its not the crappy autochoke one.

j_Burf-What do have the choke control set on
On my dads old escort you couldn't start it winter or summer without the choke half out.

They're still a pile of bollox though!! Pierburg generally are poorly made carbs. The 1.0 had the advantage of having a weber carb as standard and from my experience usually run a lot smoother.

If it was my car i'd definately fit a weber dtml. Better running and slight power gains.

in the summer you need to have it out a bit, but can put in back in before long.

In the winter, its a nightmare to get the choke right. You have to pull it right out, then push it in once you get going. When you come up to a junction you have to pull it back out again to prevent the car stalling, then push it back in after the junction. After a few miles it runs ok though.

I'm not planning on having this car next winter so the choke shouldnt be a problem

my sr is doing exactly the same at the mo and its defo the timing; overruns when you switch off you see. i have replaced dizzy cap, plugs and leads and although it runs a tad better its still lumpy, get your timing checked mate.

I should be telling myself this lol

Yeah, a weber would be a nice gain.

J-burf-Yeah that sounds like my dads old escort, i could never get the choke right
It was hit or miss whether it was still running when slowing down for a junction
