I have a slight problem with the GTE.. :?

When you start her up first thing in the morning, she idles at around 1K revs for a couple mins..but as soon as you take her above 30mph or leave her to run for 5 mins, the revs shoot up to 2.5K/3K (also when slowing down etc)..She stays at 2.5K revs for a while, then will drop all of a sudden to 1K, then shoot back up again after 2/3 seconds..

We are at a loss to think what is causing this..we've had a look at everything we can think of, but has anyone got an idea?

Something that might be relevant - she is always "cold"..i.e. the temperature guage always reads cold (below 1/4), even when she's been given a run..

Any ideas would be appreciated.

could be one of a few things, thermostat stuck open, idle air valve sticking also whaen i had a gsi the timing was advanced too far and it started reving up its self and dropping off again.
like i said its one of a few things, theres a few to start with but i'm sure some people will add to it.

timing

--^ None of the above..we've had them to bits/tried/tested..unfortunately, none of these made a difference..

But thanks anyway.

Any other ideas?

No sign off an air leak anywhere? If not, cover everything in WD 40 when its not running, move all the linkages etc around and see if anythings sticking, then if anything is, spray it again. Had a problem like that in a Fiesta once, Chucked a heap of Carb cleaner and soaked the engine from the inlet up with WD40 and sorted it. Funny smell for a while but you get that though.

Let me know if you need any bits from the EFi unit or AFM e.t.c

i have basically all of the above (converting 1.6 to carbs) just lying around in the shed. Can post it to you for a minimal cost + it's come of seans old engine so you'l know it's not been ragged :-D

yeah had this problem with mine to tho mines a gsi its still got the bosh ign system!
on the right had side of the throttle housing u will have two breather pipes if u follow them down i cant rember wich one but it will go into a cylinder along with two bigerr breathers and one coming out the bottom.
if u disconect all and remove this cylinder spray it out with wd40, and get a small flat blade screwdriver, look inside the big breather on the side of the cylinder and inside the is what would apper to be a switch, flick it open a few times with the screw driver and put it all back together!
it may rev quite high for about 30sec but after it will be as good as gold!

if not on the back of the throttle housin there is a throtle position sensor looks like a black box held in with two screws with wires going into it!
this my need adjusting if not u are looking about ?100+ for a new one!

hope this helps but this problem is verry common on bosch ign systems
