This friday my car ran out of MOT and tax...dammit, lol anyway...

The car is going into the back of my garage, to have its front end stripped off, the pain staking 1.0 is to be pulled from its home of 80,000 and to be dumped at the bottom of the tamar river where it belongs

The car is then due for some stitch welding in the engine bay, and for the pinkness to be come blue!!

Then I shall be taking delivery of a mighty 2.0 16v engine, to be located in the front of my car oooo, just need two parts and the collection of bits is completed for what i need to do the conversion! Main things i'm waiting on is a rear-disc beam, and Turbo/V6 spec front brakes...

Won't be on the road til at least mid july/august, insurance permitting...if not it won't be out til august when i can renew and declare the engine.

A few other tweaks maybe done, i maybe changing the interior...

So the story begins....

First day of progress...

Not really a lot done, most of the ancilleries off, rad out, all cosmetic stuff taking off, loom disconnected as far as the bulkhead, didn't have a lot of time today...few pictures for you to puruse..

not ANOTHER 2L16v be a little more creative ;)

Well...

Considering a 1.6 16v costs similar money its the only other engine i'd consider, plus i love how an xe nova engine bay looks 8)

XE is still the cheapest and easiest way to sub-7sec 0-60's and 30+mpg when you ain't hammering it!!!!

Nick

looks good - Should be awesome when it's XE'd

get that battery-tray sorted properly, they're a bugger to sort properly when the engines in and there's not much room to make a decent job of it.

Mike.

yeah it will look great when completed, can't believe it had a 1.0 litre in it though :o

*puts old sensible hat on!

please tell me you drive sommant else a bit quicker than a 1.0, or jumping from a 1.0 to a 2.0 may spell disaster if you hit on the loud pedal too hard!

Todays work...

Engine and all ancilleraries loose, bottom arms and tie bars away meant the engine was ready to be lowered out and under the car!

http://www.cruisesouthwest.co.uk/modules/Gallery/albums/album256/DSCN1073.jpg

Ohhh no! The 1.0 has gone

http://www.cruisesouthwest.co.uk/modules/Gallery/albums/album256/DSCN1076.jpg

Then as a 1.0 nova engine is as useless and as worthless as a toffee then we decided to punish it with a hammer

Bye bye carb!

http://www.cruisesouthwest.co.uk/modules/Gallery/albums/album256/DSCN1077.jpg

Ooops we appeared to smash a hole inside the block, as if the engine ever had enough power to do this itself!

:D Onwards now to rubbing down and welding!

Found a compulsory piece of nova rust  Nevermind, will be plated and strengthened, being a fairly clean nova its not as bad as it could be, seen at the bottom of this pic..

Erm, it shouldn't be doing that. You sure your shell isn't knackered?

Yeah i was thinking the same jim,"LOTNSR's dude make sure your not driving a nova with an engine bay full of rot..

Scott

20-06-05, 01:42 PM
Mine did that. The 1.4 split the weld behind the front strut. If it is as bad as mine was your better off scrapping it or getting some serious welding done to it. Have you had a good look all round the engine bay i found another split under the water bottle which meant goodbye to that shell.

SRimon

Seam welding in the bay done....

Ok, it doesn't look all that, but it does the job, and when i've given it a bit of a fill over and tidied it up and when its painted it will look fine, this is all structural remember and not for show! Dad's ok at welding but hasd never done it professionally or has really tried since he was 16 so i think he's done pretty well, managed to catch a sponge on fire which was funny

Well here it is now...

As i'm a stinge bag and having the unfortunate circumstance of having no spray gun, and or any spray money i bought a can of hammerite in dark blue, coincidently one of the shades of blue that my actually car is...

End of the day it looks much better than the red, ignore the bit in the top corner gotta paint aound the loom tomorrow!

2 Pics for now...

http://www.cruisesouthwest.co.uk/modules/Gallery/albums/album256/DSCN1140.jpg

http://www.cruisesouthwest.co.uk/modules/Gallery/albums/album256/DSCN1139.jpg

BTW it looks a lot better IRL, and i am going to spray around a load of laquer to stop the colour dulling as hammerite tends to do!

ade
22-06-05, 11:49 PM
erm - did you reseal the areas where you removed the sealer (that claggy yellow white stuff around welding joints etc?)

Highly recommend you do that before you paint it - hammerite is okay but its just a thin plactis coating and if water gets under it and in to your welding joints - game over...

Use tiger seal or grey stripe. Strong water proof and flexible.

Also - be careful when lacquering hammerite - its a different chemical compound to your normal lacquer and if you dont use hamerite lacquer (do they do it?) it may react and blister (like mixing enamel and cellulose).

test a small area 1st.

The welding looks good IMO. But you should have held out and saved abit more money and done a better job of the spraying in the engine bay. But like you said does look far better than red well pink.

Have i missed something?
