Seen some boxes for 6x9s and wondered if the speakers run ok in them as i thought that 6x9s were free air?? want to put them under my seats to keep them out of sight.
thanks,

indeed, the majority of them are free air. this means the suspension of the cone (voice coil) is designed to cope with any resistance of air which is being forced against the cone casused by its own movement. therefore if these were to be boxed then there would be a great strain on the cones voice coil as this would be trying to push and pull the cone but cannot easily due to the air presure behind it.

result = burnt out voice coil

So if I was to risk it, the larger the boxes I put them in the better?? Would they also sound more bassy boxed??
thanks

to some extent yeah. however the stength of the baffleboard (usually the parcel shelf) which it is fixed to can also give that effect. so if you use a mdf shelf rather than a flimsy fibre board shelf like the usual parcel shelves this could improve the sound. if its really tight punchy bass you want you could run a small sub such as a 8" or 6" which is designed to be mounted in a box. afterall a 6 x 9 is just a compromise, individual speakers set through cross overs are the way to go.

I've already got a 12" pioneer in the boot. Need some all round speakers but cutting into the doorcards for coaxials isn't an option. Tried to remove the dash speakers to replace them but can't seem to get the bloody things out?? Any tips?
thanks

is it a mk1 or mk2 dash?

if its a mk 2 there quite easy------------------

if youve got skinny little twig like fingers! lift of the grill squeaze your fingers in and and grip the plastic surround to the speaker and rotate it and it will slide off its mount.

you could just put a cossover on it (or one of those capacitors), they do scream quite load for a 10cm nokia cone if theres no bass coming from them.

if its for a mk1, im not sure how they come out.

mk1's for drivers side iirc the fuse box has to be removed
and the passenger side is just a case of taking the glove box
its suposed to be a fair bit harder especially the drivers side

whats a crossover/capacitor and what do they do? Where do you get them(links please)

a crossover is a bit of circuitry that allows different frequencies to be filtered. these can be used to filter out bass, midrange and treble etc.. . in your case the front speakers will distort when they try to pump out bass as the cone is trying to move alot rapidly to produce this sound, which its not designed to do, so if you were to stop these low frequencies from going to the speaker then more volume can be given until the sound starts to distort.

crossovers can be expensive, so you will be best using a capacitor. the capacitor will work like a crossover by filtering out the low frequency from the signal which is sent to the speaker. this is fitted in the + wire between the head unit and speaker. different size capacitors filter diffferent types of frequencies. im not sure which will be best for you so you will be best getting the value of the capacitor from a car audio shop near you (not halfords or motor world because i doubt they will know what im talking about). check the price the shop can supply them for and then try somewhere like maplins as they may be cheaper. these will only cost you a ? or two if that.

Thanks
