View Full Version : Nearly there
Right the cars starting driving but running badly. The car's apparently not opening the second port(?) on the 14 Sr carb, and wont idle right under 1500rpm. Is this due to the 270deg cam? also if you boot it and let off it'll rev up an extra 1000rpm. Is it the carb?
sounds like something sticking, a 270deg cam might be a little lumpy at idle, but it shouldn't be anything like you explained.
maybe if you were running a 300+ deg lairy cam you'd definetly notice a change at idle.

what happened to the spi system?
what happened to the spi system?
IIRC from his other thread, he dumped the SPI system for a 1400SR carb.
Personally, i think i would of stuck with the SPI.
Sounds like the carb needs setting up properly, mixture and idle speed etc.

take it to a garage and get them to set your idle and mixture settings, the cam wont do that, and if that dont cure it try another carb it might just be sticky ports

yet another reason injection is far superior
blocked jets and 6million other mechanical parts to go wrong with a skanky old carb
i'd rather have a nice simple computer and injector
it says "Error- Idle control" i know i need to turn the idle speed down, nice and simple (that single error was the only one i had after fitting a whole host of extra bits to my 1200spi motor, 10mins later and it was sorted, and it still runs and starts like it left the showroom)
We had it on SPI and it was no better, but i've lost all faith in my mechanic though so if it helps, i may try SPI again. What all do i need to change it back? Keep the 1400 spi gear of move up to 1600 stuff?

on my 1200 i have a 1.8 spi cavalier throttle body with a 1.6 spi manifold ported out to match the 1.8tb
its running a GTE cam, full exhuast and GTE manifold plus a home made induction kit
its using the original 1200 ecu but ive added a 1400 injector for good measure
for yours i'd suggest the same 1.8tb and 1600 manifold, use the original 1400spi ecu and 1400 spi injector to start with
i had to remove an antitamper cap from the throttle stop and rotate it inwards slightly as the idle wouldnt come down from 1000 and ecu was flagging a fault code, the only other issue is the ecu's a bit wild on the idle control valve now (obviously cos of the much larger tb) and tends to rev upto around 2000-2500 when its cold and will slooowly come down untill its fully warmed up when it returns to the proper 900rpm
if you let it get fully upto temperature and then see if it idles properly, the management light came on on ours as soon as it reached temp as the idle control valve is closed but idle was still too high, i adjusted the throttle stop to bring it down to 850ish and then reset the ecu and tried again and it worked perfectly

I would put it back to spi, using the 1400 system.
Just to get it running.
As long as you are getting no ECU light, then everything should be fine.
When you reconnect all the sensors etc to the ecu, then power the ecu,
the ecu will figure things out
Just give it a chance
