Well ive found out that i can now get insured on a 2.0 8v for only ?300 more than im currently paying for the 1.2, so might possibly be doing this conversion soon but have a few questions first..

Does the bay need welding for the 8v engine (the one im looking to get is the 115bhp one)
Driveshafts - whats the deal with them, do i need custom ones made up, or would GTE ones fit, or use the cav ones?

Also, is this a conversion that i myself could undertake, with only a basic mechanical knowledge, bearing in mind i have no specialist tools, no engine lift etc..I plan to buy a cav and break it for parts, hopefully making my money back, and use the engine, box and loom for myself :D

hmm.. is there really any point in fitting the 115bhp NE over fitting a E16SE/C16SE, i know it'l produce more torque and slightly more BHP from scratch..

but ease of conversion, handling e.t.c ? in my eyes it'd be better to get a 1.6 with a chepa set of twin carbs, cam e.t.c would make more than the NE's 115bhp and handle right, no welding, e.t.c

I'd say the Bay would need to be welded, as your not dealing with a massive increase in power, you're dealing with a big increase in weight.

IMO the NE is a pointless conversion.

hmm yeh i reckon your right Nick, i was interested in finding out more about the 115bhp conversion as a mate has a cav going really cheap that i could easily break for parts and make more money with..

Maybe a 1.6 conversion instead then..Would that be something i could do myself? Its just engine, box, loom and fuel tank+lines isnt it?

if you were going for the 130bhp SEH or whatever it is, then i could see more point.

Well plumbing in the Tank and Loom and Lines is a bit of a pig.

If you could source some cheap set of carbs for it (round port manifold, 40's, Linkages, Alternator bracket e.t.c) Then you could ditch the Tanks and Lines, use your carb tank.

Then if you wanted to make it even easier you could get a Kent cam or similar with the dizzy drive types machined into the end of it, use the 1.2 Distributor, Cam housing and oil seperator, and then keep all your ignition.

This is what im going to do on mine, minimal fuss really - it doesn't produce the best spark, using a 1.4 SR dizzy would be a better idea.

its the same work involved in fitting a 16v, if yuo are leaving it standard then it might be better going for a 1.6 on carbs

yeh i see where you are coming from power wise, not worth it for the hassle..

I am considering buying a rotten GTE/GSi and just transferring the parts straight over from one car to another, trouble is the insurance on the 1.6 engine is more than the 2.0 - maybe its because of the GTE/GSi badges..

well say it's a carbed 1.6 out of a Cav.

All the times i've rung they've just gone "Oooooooooooooh" when i mention 1.6 conversion, they've never actually asked me the donor car.

Forget what some ppl say about it being a waste of time fitting an 8V it deffo isnt, Mine has a ne bottom end with a 1.8 head + manta carb, it all goes rather well 2gether and was last dynoed at 132bhp..

Ive finally got my finger out and have started to purchace the parts for stage 2, ive so far got a twin carb inlet manifold and a kent cam, im also reverting back to a 2L head.. Ive heard that 170bhp can deff be got with the mods i plan so watch this space..

you could have a 1.6 @ 132bhp for less hassle and probaly less money. and it would handle right.

explain how 132bhp comes out of a 1.6 engine with less hassle and money.. The engine thats in my car cost no more than ?300 fiitted
