well im off to buy some new wings on the week end and that seems the right time to smooth the ariel hole off and maybe the side repeaters.

but what do you put on the under side of the wing (to stop filler falling through) would you use a piece of card or somthing???
will filler be allright to use???

also do you need side repeaters? will it fail the MOT etc?

cheers, lew

the best way to get rid of the indicator + ariel holes would be to weld em up, however the new wings may not even come with any holes in. If you cant weld them up then ruff the holes up with a bit of sand paper and put a layer of glass fibre filler paste on the reverse side. once this dries fill whats left of the plugged hole with some filler.----- make sure the holes and surrounding areas are roughed up though or the filler could crack as it may not stick properly.

as for the legal side of no side repeaters. i have read before that you need to be able to see a signal on the front 1/3 or your car from a side on view. however i have had a car with no side repeaters before and this had always past its mot. you may be best looking on the mot webside for more info.

alright yer, does it still work alright though if you filler them?

well i'll try and find out about the side repeaters then, but iv seen cars in total vauxhall without them so......

yours may well fail mot with it been a mk1
mk2's the indicators curve round the wing more so you can see them operating from the side more

Stand parallel to the rear bumper, and 10 metres away from the car. If you can see the front indicators light up (not just a slight glow) then you don't need side repeaters. AFAIK the mk1 doesn't pass this test.

if you try just shoving some filler in the hole it will fall out the only way to do it really is weld a plate behind it

alright looks like i'll just leave them in

looks like i'll be getting my dad to weld a plate in then

Hey m8!

i just bought and fitted some new wings on me nova and i had to drill all the holes meself so you shouldnt need no welding!

Just Nova's wings come with no holes if that helps, Although as there not GM parts may require alittle bit of work.

well im buying some second hand ones off a guy on here (novakiller)
so they'll probably have holes allready in them.

but was just looking in haynes and it says you have to cut around the old wing to get it off the car as there is sealer on it, then it says you need to put some on when you put the new wings on. so what stuff do you use for that?

Nah its not quite as bad as you now think, Basically theres two bolts on the inside drivers footwell. You will need to take the shelf out & there a bugger to get too! Then theres the obvious bolts down the wing crease, Oh...one under the car, Then a couple at the front behind the bumper. You will need to remove that & theres two bo,ts on each side, Take the wheels off & youll see what I mean.

As for sealer.....I think its just mastik take at the top of the wing under the 6 bolts. Nothing else I can think it could be. My wing came off easy!

alright nice one.

where abouts do you get this mastik stuff then?

believe the 1/3 of the car thing to be right and aslng as theres no indicator or hole where it shud be left if it ent there it cant be tested so can be failed on so to speak .. most mot places wont even be arsed / notice ..

but id suggest either a wing mirror indicator or somethin of similar job to save u any probs

If you need a repeater and its not there you will fail. If the MOT garage doesn't pick up on this they could have their license revoked.

well im now going to keep them as i dont want to smooth them off and then need to put them back in etc.

but now im thinking of maybe moving them lower, but i'll see what it looks like first. any one else done this???

u only need them workin and in place if theres somewhere for them ..

some standard cars actually come without um coz u can see the front indicators from the side as with mk2 novas ..

ent a hard job but jus leavin em n puttin clear rounds or somethin wud jus luk tidy ;)

Whether or not you fill the hole doesn't detract from whether or not you need them. A Mk1 will require some form of side repeater, although doesn't have to be located on the wing.

In the same, but obverse way you can remove a repeater from a Mk2, so long as you remove the entire item - bulb, holder and lense - and fit a resistor in to stop it from flashing too fast. As the Mk2 doesn't need a side repeater.

does anyone know when this side repeater law came in to force? i had a mk1 golf gti with no repeaters and it had had a fair few mots like that. it was an old car though

havent read any of this apart from the 1st bit but when I smoothed my ariel hole I used a metal washer with the smallest hole I could find. Stuck it to the underside with epoxy resin (the 2 part stuff you mix together) and then smoothed body filler over it from the underside initially (once the epoxy had set). Then I smoothed body filler over the top - leaving a small mound. I then left it for 48 hours to fully harden before sanding.

Once sanded, i skimmed it with cellulose putty to remove and final pin holes/sinkage and smoothed this ready for spraying...

worked wonders.

if you cant find a washer, use some thick plastic card (most hobby shops sell it)

as said you need to be able to see a indicator from a side view which mk2s can and mk1 cant (only exception is very eary mk1s which done require them as razorjack said pre 1986)
