View Full Version : 1.2i stuff into 1.2 carb block = 1403cc

Does this definately work? If so whats the exact list of what I'll need please. Sounds a good cheap way of getting more power but are there any down sides like will it damage my 1.2 carb engine?

dont know what you mean, far as i know the engines are the same, only differance is the carb, cat etc.
i agree with david on this one
the 1.2i has a longer stroke and the 1.2 carb had a lager bore
BUT the 1.2i little ends are 18mm (as far as i remember) and the 1.2 carb ends are 20mm (as far as i remember)
check in haynes
BUT if you do it you wont ahve a very revvy 1.4 engine. your best off getting a 1.4 engine that is designed to be a 1.4 lol

i think you'd have to use the 1.2i rods and crank if the big ends are different?
If the main bearings are the same (which they would be i would of thought) then i can see no reason why it won't work.
i was told of this eairler and was makin plans to do it as well but what do u mean by "you wont ahve a very revvy 1.4 engine"? in waht way dose that affect the engine?
a long stroke dosent promote a very free revving engine. granted it may increase your torque output by a marginal ammount but it wont be good for much over about 6500rpm before it starts to get a bit iffy.
would u say it would be a good idea?
and do u have to change the both the crank and rods or can u just change one? just wondering how each would affect the engine. but if i picked up rite from what u said eailer u can only change the lot? prob looks like a big load of shit that i just wrote lol
are you thinking of the 1300 crank and rods and 1.2 pistons :?:
well i dont know enough about it but i was thinkin more about the 1200i parts but im for runnin a 1.2 with a few mods as in t40s, 270 cam polishes+ports head 4-2-1 manifold and lightened flywheel so i want the bes torque i can get with the ability to take a bit abouse as i want to put in good straight lines as thats all i will be usin the what ever power i get for.
nove power the 1.2 and 1.2i are the same engines. so if your planning on putting twin 40's on it makes no difference which you get

they arn't the same engines. In fact they don't share anything in common. The block casting is basically the same (as is all nova blocks excluding 1.0 and diesel) but the boreing is different. Head is different, fuel system is different, exhaust is different, inlet is different.
The only real thing they have in common is the '1.2' bit in their name.
i think the 1300 crank has a similar stroke to the 1.2i.
i know the 1300 has the longest stroke out of the 1.2-1.4 carburated engines.
well i dont what to have a engine that cant reve up to a good high reve to give a bita power. what differences would i get if i was to fit the 1.2i crank to the 1.2 and what differences would i get if i was to fit 1.2i rods to a 1.2? i like the idea of changin the cc but not to lose some reves casue thatswhere im hopin to get my power. if im thinkin right :?

IIRC it was said in a previous post that if you take a 1.2 carb block and put in a 1.2i crank and rods then this would increase the engine to 1403cc.
I was just wondering if this really works. Also anything else needed, and up/down sides to doing this.

1.2i 1.3 and 1.4 have the same stroke
73.4mm
so it wont be any less or more revvy than a real 1400
you'll just have 77.8mm bore rather than 77.6mm bore giving the extra capacity
but as someone mentioned the later engines have 18mm gudgeonpin and earlier ones had 20mm
so u'd need a 1.2i crank (or 1.4 or 1.3 crank as they are all the same)
1300 rods
1200 carb pistons
or overbore the carb block to 78.1mm and use 1.2i crank and rods plus 0.5mm oversize 1400 pistons
at the end of the day the only advantage of doing all that (it wont exactly be cheap as your basically doing a full rebuild) is to have a 1400 with "12ST" on the engine block for some insurance hacks
if all u want is a 1400 engine then go get a 1400 engine out scrapyard and rebuild it if need be
cheers, so what extra costs is there once i have the crank and rods? and what else is needed as tom_beverley asked?
(sorry for the hijack)

the crown height of the piston is different.. you'll need to check these things or ask some one who actually works at engines rather than posts speculations

the crown height on the 1200carb pistons may well be different but the +0.5mm 1400 ones i suggested at the end of the last post wont and they will work perfectly fine
it may be speculation but im not a complete twat, the first engine i built was an amalgamation of 1400spi, sr and GTE parts, i speculated it would work, built it and it did work went quite well too
the 1200 carb pistons and block with 1300 crank and 1300 rods is a very old method to get 1400cc engines and was used perfectly successfully years ago when 1400 blocks didnt exist - being an engine tuner im surprised youve never heard of it
as i pointed out in the last post theres very little reason to goto the hassle of doing all that unless u want it for dodgy reasons (ie insurance fraud) as your gonna spend a shitload on rebuilding an engine that u could get cheaper from scrapyard (even if a real 1400 needed rebuilt it would be cheaper than trying to find bits from a host of different engines)
but on the other hand if youve got the bits sitting in your yard or whatever and are planning a rebuild anyway then why not use the bits that are there
cheers man. i can assure ya that in about a years time i will be askin all over agin lol but cheers for the info
