Very nice! :D
What sort of BHP are you hoping for?
With solid lifters and steel internals I guess around the 250 mark.

Adam Moran
25-04-05, 05:57 PM
About 230bhp wit htis set up. If you use intruder pistons you can get 250bhp.

Should be alot of fun when its done

Awesome Adam!

You really have come along way in a short space of time mate. I remember how chuffed you where when we put your first engine in, i look forward to seeing your face when you drive it now.

Exactly the spec i would go for mate, it will be up there with the quickest and will be amazing around a track.

You will have to take me out in it

P.S i completly forgot about the throttle cable clamps you wanted, do you still need a couple mate? If so i will get them and drop them in the post.

Karl

Adam Moran
25-04-05, 10:16 PM
Thanks Karl

It's all your fault this is!!! You said to me and i quote "i garantee in 2 weeks time you will want somthing quicker" Well after 2 engines and 2 years i STILL want somthing quicker lol I just hope that this is the end of the line for the Nova and i can concentrate on my AC Cobra

I'm ok for the clamps, went for tb's insted :D

Catch up with you soon buddy

wots that steel strengthening plate u have in your hand there??? is this part of this harry hockley kit i keep hearing about??

does anyone have more information on this kit-- or would it be hard 2 make your own as im thinking seriously about building a valver

karl Rowntree
19-05-05, 11:39 AM
IMHO Adam i wouldnt put graphics on it mate, allways liked your car because it looked so simple and understated. Once you put graphics on it, you draw even more attnetion to it and people expect it to be fast. I think its better to keep it subtle, then blow them away. Plus its very difficult to find a graphic that would look good on a nova, the graphic above is awfull just my opinion mate.

Yes that is part of the H H kit, the kit is being fitted as the build manual shows,

The kit is only ?100 from HH but its quite a lot of work to get fitted

Adam Moran
21-05-05, 09:25 AM
Kit now fitted, engine bay being sprayed shortly.

Just waiting for the last few bits for the engine build then it will be built and then dyno'd and mapped at the same time. Should be ready by the end of August with a bit of luck :D

I think the welding is being done as the nova build manual shows, I'll get some pics out of his book when he brings it round,

certainly makes the firewall stiff as, should be real tough, car is well solid anyway which makes it nice to work on

23-05-05, 09:57 PM
Olly that is an awsome job ;-) Saw you car at Billing 2 years ago and its stunning.

I could spend more time and effort to get mine to a similar standered but tbh its going to spend its life on the track not for people to admire so theres no point. 90% of my money went into the engine build lol

ollster
23-05-05, 10:46 PM
cheers mate, gotta say the work you are doin on yours look top notch too mate. God was that billing 2 years ago! thats the last time i drove the car, its been in bits since with final year uni etc ive just not had the time or money to build it as quick as i would have liked, and to be honest im startin to loose enthusiasm, there is still a lot more money to go into it for the throttles brakes etc. Im so tempted to strip it and put the money into turning my g40 into a track weapon; its seing threads like this thats gives me a bit of motivation to finish the thing lol

karl Rowntree
23-05-05, 10:52 PM
Keep going lads, looks like both are going to be mint

P.S Ollster, did you realise that there was a copy write on the engine you have a picture of? Well chuffed you used a picture of mine, exactly what i was like with Barts yellow nova. We had to keep reminding ourselfs what it should look like.

It was Oct 03 issue with a blue wide arch Cavalier on the front.

Jules, it has been in Total Vauxpoo mag. Few years ago now. Not in its current state but not enough changed to get a re-feature. Had stereo in back, carpet and creature comforts!

It was Oct 03 issue with a blue wide arch Cavalier on the front.

Cheers

Martin

I liked the feature of yours in Car & car conversions (back in the day) that Walshy did.

update :

Me and a mate finally got time to get the engine in on Saturday, due to the competetion mounts it was a pain in the **** to fit as once mounted you could not move the engine about to get it sitting correctly but eventually we got there

Next update

I have had the wiring loom in bits and taken out everything not required and now routed it back through the engine bay, fitted a few tanks and wipers etc..
I spent a while messing around with the engine mounts to get the engine to sit nicer only to find that when I fitted the exhaust manifold that it hits the drivers side tie bar  some fettling is clearly required here
Got quite a few smaller jobs done too and hopefully tomorrow the bits from rally design should show up so I can get the coilovers back on and brakes etc..
Will keep updating as things get done

Time for a bit of an update....

Came close to breaking it but jb made me see sense!

Words and pictures taken from Turbo-Nutters. Words by Jonboy

:thumb:

Due to work commitments not much got done on the car last year, it was nearly broken up but luckily Ad chose to stick it out and with another year starting it seemed a good enough reason to finally get it done.

The engine and box was dropped in last year, a few other bits were trial fitted but that was about it.

First problem come around when I fitted the tie bars and found the drivers one was catching the exhaust manifold, a smaller tie bar was fitted but it was still far too close so that was one thing that definately had to be sorted.

In this pic you can see the problem:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/adex2.jpg

Considering the cost of a new manifold it was out of the question to have another made so a custom tie bar setup seemed the best route, sadly the only off the shelf option is ?1000 which is designed with rallying in mind, really not needed on this car.

Even though with the thinner tie bars fitted you only gained about 1mm gap, it was no way safe enough as these have been known to break, this could lead to a rather nasty accident.

I know of someone who was making something to similar to what I needed so I asked him to make me a set.

They sit miles away from the manifold now so that could now be fitted.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/tiebar.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/rosejointbar.jpg

Before the manifold was fitted It needed to be heat wrapped, I used Thermo Tec wrap, 50 foot and another 25foot further down the manifold.

Its the first time I've used any and god damn it makes you itch lol, full of fibreglass or similar which ends up all over you !

Finished result:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/wrapped.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/fitted.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/wrap2.jpg

I need to order some new bushes for the wishbones then I can get it back on its wheels with some brakes.

Hopefully next month we'll get everything else for the fuel system then its ready to run.

It will use a 1.5litre external swirl pot in the boot with the fuel lines in car.

Lee303 off MIG made the tie bars, I saw some in his build thread he made and knew they would be the answer to the tie bar issue.

The engine loom is now in and done, a few other bits are now bolted in but not much else done besides that.

Will probably run a carbed tank (as i have one coming off a mate) into a facet red top then external swirl pot in the boot feeding a cosworth fuel pump.

Ben- Escorts coming along about as fast as this nova lol its been dipped and I'll know more by the end of the week.

Right, time for another update, Ad came up this weekend so we got quite a bit done on the car.
The engine bay is now fully wired, the new engine loom is in, 90% of the engine bay is complete, just waiting on a few parts to arrive then than side of things will be done.
The interior and fuel system is next to finish, a set of buckets and a new dash setup have hopefully been sourced so I will collect them asap. The whole fuel system and oil cooler will be aeroquipped which I hope I'll get this week, then it should be quite close to running. I hope by the end of March it will be running and ready for mapping in April.
Heres some pics of how it looks so far:

75 foot in total, I expected that would of been enough to go half way down the car ! maybe at a later date Ad will get the rest done.

Rick- Gsi dash would look better but tbh if it gets changed for anything it will be a flocked dash. I'm getting a load of bits doen on the escort so I might chuck them another nova dash to do.

Its all down to what he uses it for tbh, I believe its gone way past being a road car so luxeries are pointless, it is however not my car so I'll do what Ad wants (to the car that is ;)

Ok small update.
A few parts showed up today so thought I'd get them fitted and finally find out how little room (if any) we had to fit the filter.

Originally the trumpets were chopped down slightly and drilled for nitrous injectors, these were fine for when using nitrous but shocking when your not so a new set was purchased. The problem was that they are big and clearance between them and the bulkhead was extremely tight so it was hit and miss if the firewall was going to have to be cut off.
After squashing the filter into a shape it wasn't overly happy about I managed to get it on which although its tight to the firewall shouldn't be a problem as the engine is nigh on solid mounted, time will tell though.
Heres the pics of the trumpets etc..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/trumpets.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/filteron.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/braceon.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/sideview.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/damntight.jpg

As you can see its mega tight but I'm confident that it will be alright.
Only other part that showed up was a 11" Pacet Fan, it took all of 5 mins to fit but its another step closer to being complete now :)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/pacet.jpg

Whilst I had my mop to hand I thought I'd just buzz over a part of the roof to see if there was anychance of improving the paint where it had faded so much, besides making a fooking mess everywhere I think it will come up fine, the edges are always a pain on red cars as you cant go anywhere near them with the mop so they will need to be finished by hand.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/mopped.jpg

And thats it till the weekend, still waiting on the aeroquip and a few other parts but its really starting to get close to running finally.

Going to change the rear suspension as were not atall happy with the way the AVO's sit to the wheel (-1mm) and on track it could cause a serious accident. So thats being sorted at the moment.

Have you used anything special for routing the lines out into the fr arches for the fr calipers? ie bulkhead fittings or whatever.

Jonlem
08-05-07, 11:07 AM
The whole car is using bulkhead fittings for fuel and brakes.

I haven't installed the front lines yet but I do have bulkhead fittings for those, just not sure if I'm going to bother using them yet as the engine is really in the way for me to get to where I wanted to install them

The bill for the brake setup was ?165 exc bias lever.

I did get a load more fittings than it turned out I needed so I'm going to return those for a refund.

Most expensive bit to do by far is a oil cooler, -10 fittings and hose is pricey.

Yeh no problem mate, once I've got other fittings I'll be able to tell you exactly what you need to fit the whole car out.

I'm not keen on hose through grommets which is why everything has bulkhead fittings. Should be no reason for leaks as we spent long enough making all the hoses up !

I've been on/in the Nova scene for a fair few years now (8 years!!) and ive always had a picture in my head of what id really like to have.

Been though a few novas and modified each of them to different levels... never forget the day i rocked up at Andy B's house and Rowntree says "For starters you can remove those ****ing led lights!" Oh how things have changed now!

I owe an awful lot to the guys ive met and the help the have given me.

James aka Jonlem has been the main driver in the last 2 years of the project and without his help we wouldnt be where we are today so BIG thankyou to him.

ha ha, it does exist honest lol

tbh the shell now looks worse than when we started as it has no paint and sits in primer covered in dust.

The axle as expensive as it was just looks like a big axle with a few shiny bits, all the expensive Quaife stuff you cant see lol

iirc I think I did start a thread on here about it, besides the new turbo, brakes and axle I dont think I've really got much more to report about it.

Ofcourse when I take your car to Glyns I'll be able to report back on how mine is actually coming along, I will also find out if he wants to sell me that ex Btcc Vectra engine he has just laying about !

The car is finally back on its wheels, all the brakes are bled up and there is just a list of minor things to be completed.

Typically those minor things take a lot longer than I first thought so the car hasn't been moved over to the engine builder for checkover and run up just yet.

I do hope to get it over there this week as I'm off to Italy next week and need to start running it in from the minute I arrive back in the uk.

Thanks to all those that have helped over the last week or so.

Thankyou so much for all your comments, advice, help on the project. This car would never have been born without Novaload (oldskool NL anyway!)

See you all at PVS :)

No problem Ad, enjoyed having something to do with novas !

Going to be cutting it mega fine for PV but it "should" be there depending on getting it run in and mapped.

8 days left from when I return from Italy !

Why do Novas look so cool in a garage with the bumpers missing?

Adam Moran

Because they are cool Craig!

As you may have seen or not seen should i say the Nova wasnt at PVS.

Due to running out of time and JB/Me have waaaay to much on

I'm buying a house and going to be a dad, JB was jet setting to Italy with work so it just couldnt be done.

Will update shortly with where we are.

Well at last it runs !

I've only run it for about 10 mins max though as the dash is back at Stack having a white face and blue backlights fitted.

TB's need balancing though, they were perfect until I removed them and fitted them upside down !

I'll get a vid on you tube later, not much to hear except noisy lifters lol

Well small update.

Most deadlines have gone out of the window due to Adam having a few important matters to attend to but it has to be ready for september when we go to the ring.

Since I lasted posted the oil cooler had started leaking which meant having it welded up twice, then the water pump started weeping a little so it was nigh on engine out to sort that fooker out

The dash is back and now fitted, just got the speed sender to fit then that will all work correctly.

Started making a seperate loom for the fuel pumps and level sender but I'm still waiting for the right sleeving to turn up as Royal mail once again are taking the piss .

Once the wiring is done nicely the seats can go in and hopefully it will be ready for a MOT, i've not got a great deal of time this week to do much but I hope to have it ready for its MOT before I go to Wales on holiday next week.

Update as no doubt Ads not online to mention it lol

The car is on the road, MOT is booked for 9 am, it will be run in by Monday then booked in for mapping by the engine builder the following week :)

Few issues already though, geometry couldn't be any further out lol, brakes are truelly shocking so I'm not that convinced that the 16v master cylinder was the way to go after all :(

Besides that its probably the most noisy nova I've been in, possibly not as I'm far to used to driving around in a standard cavalier but I will be taking ear plugs for the running in process.

Next question is has anyone got the MBE software as I'd like to check what the map was the previous owner ran ;)

Get some big mahoosiveee ear defenders for the ring trip!

Glad to see its all come together, cant wait to hear the figures it puts out when its run in! Should be superb.

Get Easimap 5.5 from the sbd website matey. Its free! woohoo!

Jonlem
15-08-07, 12:07 AM
Well I've got it at home now ready for the MOT, I'm quite sure the handling issue is just simply geometry, nothing is really set properly yet so the drive to the MOT station tomorrow will be different lol

Brakes work ok actually, however pedal travel is awful, I'm not sure if that is me being to used to my own car though as V6 calipers to tend to give that problem.

Either way its so nearly road worthy, got 2 A4 pages worth of bits to do ready for the ring but nothing except geometry is getting done before its mapped and we know its all ok.

Another late update lol

The car passed its mot without any problems

Its booked onto Track and Roads rollers for tuesday evening.

So far whilst running it in I can tell the gearbox is going to fall to pieces so I have another arriving to be diffed and fitted before tuesday.

Whilst out last night the crank seal on the oil pump decided to fall out just before I pulled over (which was just as well) oil everywhere as you can imagine but nothing more than belt and seal replacement so al is good there.

A few pics from last night inc the worrying moment

Got a early start tomorrow as sourced another gearbox to go in it as the main shaft bearings are all but gone on this one.

Will swap the quaife over and that should be that problem sorted, replace the seal, fit a new belt, change the coolant and all the senders to stack ones so it reads correctly on the dash then it will be ready for the rollers on tuesday after the alarm is fitted.

Cheers Rob, the ring will be fine I'm sure, I don't think either of us will push the car particulary hard as its really not had a good shakedown and there is those small handling issues that I want to iron out before it gets used real hard on track.

I'll put a few more pics from last night up in GC if anyone wants to have a look.

The guy who took the photos is coming to the ring in his P1 so expect loads more pics of that quality, hopefully less of the nova being fixed though lol

yes 6pm at Track and Road

Rick, with brakes like it has I wouldn't blame him for preferring the golf lol

Once back from the ring it has to have the brakes looked at as they simply aren't adequate enough imo

Got a problem with the gearstick so if anyone reading this can look in technical and offer some advice I'd appreciate it :thumb:

Its either the fact that V6 calipers just give huge amounts of pedal travel or the different m/c is making it worse.

After taking a sorted mk2 for a spin with a pedal box (which the brakes worked with 1mm of movement on the pedal) I think it will end up going down that route at a later date.

My AP's had less pedal travel than these ones !

Now that was a late night !

So for a start the it turned out the cam timing wasn't quite right and without the engine builder being there we had to leave that alone rather than risk piston/valve contact.

We switched to a set of 411cc injectors as from the start it looked as if the creams were going to be at 100% duty cycle if the engine made what we aimed for.

Fuel pressure was set to a nice and safe 2.5 bar using those and the mapping commenced !

4 hrs later, lots of tea and enough burgers off the van to feed my village and we come out with 204hp, not what we were looking for at all but the blame was put down to the cam timing.

I was happy to leave it at that and get it sorted then come back after the Ring but Steve was convinced he could play around with the fuelling and ignition to get some more out of it.

I was once again asked if it had steel rods and a decent crank and so the rev limit was raised to 8700rpm !

The next few runs started to make me feel a bit nervous so I made another cuppa and started to smoke my 50th fag for the night, 10 mins later the engine is screaming its tits off and Stave gave me the big thumbs up

222.4hp @ 8640 !

Torque was down to 162lbft but Steve said there is more power left and a chunk of torque when the cam timing is exactly what it needs to be.

Being that it was 1am at this point we knocked it on the head and swiftly gave it a blat down the road whilst looking for somewhere to get some Optimax from followed by a rather long and noisy drive home.

Huge thanks to both Steves at Track and Road, they really stuck at it and got a much better result than even they thought they would get with how the cam timing was !

I'm not off to bed as I'm fooking shattered but I'll post the graphs up in the next few days as we now have to get all the cars ready for the ring.

Ad- prepare yourself for a bit of a mental ride lol

411cc iirc, think they are the latest volvo Bosch injectors.

Anything over 9k is bad news for the crank but If he thought it would cause a problem he wouldn't of taken it that far.

Chances are when the cam timing is adjusted we will end up with 1 powerband not 2.

It tails off at 7700 ish iirc and then comes back on at 8k lol

Once its sorted I imagine we wont need to go above 8500k

Enjoy it Ad :) Lol

Jonlem
29-08-07, 02:08 PM
Its a mix up of loads of bits that came available to me a few years ago that Ad decided to put on his (what was at the time basic tb xe build) lol

Pocketed Accralites
Cat Cams Steel Rods
Lightened and balanced crank
Blydenstein cylinder head
QED 450 Camshafts
QED Double valve springs
QED Solid lifter conversion
Jenvey tapered tb's
MBE 967
Simspon manifold and system
Baffled sump
SBD Steel gears in the oil pump

Thats the main bits anyway

ashtal
29-08-07, 06:21 PM
Thats a big spec. Sounds like it should make some more ponny's when it's all sorted.

Jonlem

Thats a big spec. Sounds like it should make some more ponny's when it's all sorted.

Maybe looking at around another 10-15hp more power he reckoned and we should see some of the torque back.

It seems like the head is flowing much better than expected but tbh it can't be far off its limit so I wouldn't expect a huge increase in power.

Not having much luck with gearboxes at the moment, done 2 in a week and looks like this one might be on its last legs already !

Being sensible I'm going to source one and take it to Germany with us incase the one in it lets us down lol :thumb: :D

Jonlem
23-09-07, 02:38 PM
Well I thought either Ad or I had updated this thread but obviously not lol

The trip to Germany didn't quite go to plan, along with a million other problems that we had prior to leaving we picked up a noise coming from the engine whilst passing Brussels :(

Rather than even attempt to fix it there we had the car recovered home and hired a car instead !

Once we were back the car was dropped back off at my engine builders who quickly found out that a shim had come off a valve ?! on starting it back up there was still a noise so he asked me to remove the engine so he could inspect it further.

So this weekend I got round to taking the engine out, after a few hours I was left with this :

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/engineless1234.jpg

On closer inspection of the engine I found that a valve guide had broke off which is where the noise will of been coming from. So in a while I'll be dropping it off to have 16 bronze guides fitted along with some other bits then with any luck it will be back in time for a rolling road day myself and Ad are attending (Ford day)

If you look carefully in the pic you can see the guide :

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/valveguidebroke.jpg

Not long till its back together with any luck !
