i'm thinking about getting a quik rack, how easy/hard are they to fit, i don't really want to end up taking the engine out to do it. i don't have a ramp to fit it on either so it would have to be done on axle stands

cheers

I did mine earlier this year, but my engine was already removed so it was a doddle. There are 4 nuts to remove the rack but I am not sure how easy they are to get to you will have to take a look. the hardest thing I found was removing the track rod end from the stub axle, which took a few sharp blows with a trusty hammer on the end of the stub axle. I got a Quaife quick rack which was easy to rebuild with the haynes. 1 thing I had to do though was get a new bearing as I couldnt remove the old one but they are standard and you can get them from a bearing supply shop for about a fiver or so.

the only one ive "done" was with an XE in situ, but the garbox was out and it was on ramps lol.

id say it will be a bitch of a job on axel stands with the engine in, but not impossible.

with the 8v engines there is enough room to change a rack.

if your on about just swaping the rack its not exactly a hard job, i did mine on some axle stands last year. Only thing that might cause you trouble will the the track ends if they dont want to come out the hub.

:D

The Quick raxk kits are around ?125 and the replacement Rack, the whole thing assembled is around ?150. Anyone in Ireland or The North , try the Pace Notes Rally paper. There's loafds in there, even a Nova Corsa Specialist in there doing Carbon fibre bonnets for ?225.

I got mine Direct from Quaife, I think it was about 80 quid. From what I can gather supply might be a bit poor I was told that if Quaife had them get one direct rather than from someone like Demon Tweeks who were a few quid cheaper.

Steering racks arent too hard to swap, just follow the Haynes and slide the rack out the side of the engine bay. You'll easily do it on a set of axle stands.

You can buy a kit or the whole rack, ?75 or ?125 and the main (or best) suppliers are Quaife and Quik Racks

There's no isue dropping out the rack with the engine in, it's a bit fiddle to get the 13mm nuts off. Takes abotu 20-30mins to get the rack off.

then to swap the quickrack in you'll need to drill out the top seal on the pinion so it's best to get a new one from vx before you start. then you'll need some ring clip pillars to pop it out, then it's pretty simple.

You may need to release the spring damper bit after it goes in cause I found my to be a little too stiff on the original setting.

It's all pretty simple, took me 3hours all in with a bit of a tea break in the middle. But the transformation in handling is worth it 3x over

Hurry up and do it.

as previously said removing the rack's not a problem, i'd definately recommend buying a fully built rack, i bought a quaife kit and it can be a bit of a ball ache fitting it to the rack.
The transformation is unbelievable well worth any amount of hassle, as soon as the track / road gets twisty u'll be grinning :D

there is no problem with you bringing it to me and using the ramps and air tools mate

ive heard rumblings of quick racks wearing out relatively quickly (ie 10000miles)

is this the case with the quaife item? i was thinking about one for mine but im not gonna bother if its just gonna die on me after 8 months

Are they any good. I want one but dont know if they are practical for every day use.

yes they are good, they totaly transform your driving experience

having driven two with racks and one with just a smaller wheel (poor mans quick rack) id say the rack wins big time!
