car amp

i have a legacy amp in my car to power a sony xplod sub. i've been at uni so didn't take the sub with me, but left the amp in my car. came back home today. plugged my sub in, but doesn't plap any music through it, just keeps playing a a drone of thuds. turn the gain down and it goes quieter but is still there. disconnected the phono leads and and the drone stops...
any ideas anyone? :?

sounds harsh. could be the output from the amp or the input from the headunit. if not that than the sub could be damaged.

p.s. why not leave the sub in the car and enjoy it at uni? i am.
