View Full Version : Tinting windows.......the facts
I have just got off the phone to VOSA after sending them an e-mail at the weekend, trying to clarify the rules and regs regarding window tinting.
The conclusion is, as far as VOSA is concerned, that the current regs are that the front windows CAN be tinted in any way so long as light transmission(?sp) is not reduced by more than 30% (25% through the windscreen).
If your vehicle exceeds this limit you can either be served notice to remove them or, in some cases, have your car impounded there and then.
It is also illegal to sell a vehicle that exceeds these limits as the vehicle is deemed unroadworthy.
I hope this clears the subject up for a lot of people
Just remember, just because VOSA have ok'd it, doesn't mean your insurance co will accept it!
Could have told you that..
All the information is on Vosa.gov.uk and has been for a while.
30% is basically a standard factory tint as on the majority of cars these days.

I have posted the url address to the leaflet before and it didnt help so I thought I'd give it to everyone straight..............OK!
Here is the link to the leaflet. It is a pdf file.

I would read that leaflet but i'm a lazy cnut
Does it say in there the 30% figures and etc? What I'm getting at is, is it there in writing? So if the police decide to impound your car or order the removal of tints, you can come back and say they're legal (if they are only <30% tint that is)
hmm... those cookies look tasty :P
This is straight from the leaflet.........
Road Vehicles (Construction & Use) Regulations 1986 as amended specify the minimum levels of light that must pass through the
windscreen and front side windows. The limits are:
Motor Vehicles first used before 1 April 1985:
The windscreen and front side windows must allow at least 70% of
light to be transmitted through them.
Motor Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1985:
The light transmitted through the windscreen must be at least 75%.
The front side windows must allow at least 70% of light to be
transmitted through them.
If the glass is tinted to a point whereby it lets through less light,
then the vehicle does not meet legal requirements.
this should be made a sticky
