Ticking before the engine starts

my car makes a funny ticking or clicking before it starts, i have to stop try again 2 or 3 times, what could this be lads? Starter motor im thinking , but not to sure

i think every starter motor makes a clicking sound before the engine starts lol

i think i know what you mean, when ever mine has done it it was a lose earth strap or a flat battery. But if its a flat battery then it wont fire up after wards.
