View Full Version : Removing door cards etc ARRGGGHH
Please help a tired man in need!!!! :bad-word:
I am getting a replacement stereo/speaker set this week and have just been out to look at where the speaker cable runs etc (i still have the factory set in at the moment)
However, how the devil are you supposed to take all the door trims off?? I started in the boot with the one that the current speakers are joined to, I undid all the bolts and then tried to pull it off gently but the plastic plugs would not budge. I eventually tugged away and when it came off it snapped the tops off the majority of the plugs, only for me to find the wire just goes inside the body of the car and dissapears. How do i then get the ones next to the back seat off????
Any help would be much appreciated!!! :?: :?:

The rear quarter panels should just prise off mate, its the front doorcards that are harder - you need a tool to remove the window winder else its a pain in the arse job

m8 get yourself a large piece of cloth ( old t shirt is fine ) pull it very tight and slide it under the winder , keeping it taught , now use a " sawing " action and keep an eye out for the retainer clip that holds your winder on ..you may have to try this at several angles on the winder till it pops off ( the clips hard to locate when it pings off tho so keep an eye out )...
I,ve gotta be honest , when I did this I lost one of the clips . so i treated me motor to a new set of winders ...ebay all the way.
good luck.
Thanks, it was just a bit of a shock when all the plug tops snapped off, suppose i could get replacement ones from b&q or somewhere.
Think i will try and remove the back panels tomorrow, i am just a bit worried about breaking them and stuff but i suppose it should be ok. No doubt i will find that the wire doesnt even go down that way!!!
Well I have found where the wires run down and am able to get to most of them, apart from when it hits the front of the car. They just seem to dissapear and then reappear in the back of the stereo.
Will it be a massive job rewiring the back speakers to the head unit? There doesnt seem to be any room under the dash to be able to fiddle around with tiny wires? Also the speaker wire on the passenger side clips into a connecter, will my new speakers do the same??
Thanks for any help
just run some additional wires if your so bothered, under the carpet and seats
The circlip on the window winder handles is a nightmare..
you may as well plumb some leccy windows in whilst your there

Easiest way to get the circlip off the winders is to put a fat flat screwdriver behind the handle and turn the winder normally pops right off for me!
You can get a proper removal tool, but as Kyle said its usually cheaper/easier to just wangle around with a screwdriver!

I use a tiny piece of stiff piano wire with a very small bend in the end. Bend the handle out slightly and then hook it over the clip and pull.
One tip, when your putting the winder back on make sure the clip is opposite the handle part as it makes it a whole lot easier to get back out.
If your still interested in my doorcards then I can help you get the winders off when you come to pick them up. I may even have a couple of spare rear panels or just the clips.

And wheres the fun in using the correct tools???
if you've got velour interior (posher models) you wont have a chance in hell of seeing the circlip at all...

what I did to remove the winder is pull the hand out as much as u can til u see the pin then get a flat head screwdriver in there and pul it out but watch out its pings of hehe also the back speaker wires on mine 1.2 goes under the sill cover u know the grey plastic one also if u cant find them on mine its a green set and a white set but it maybe diff on yours just get a multi meter and check it :D if not blue a speaker in and try aslong as u dont wire it up to a red black brown or yellow lead :D youll be ok :D
why are you all removing the front door cards?
the nova doesnt have speakers in doors (unless he wants to fit them).
This depends on what model you have -
basically
1 you need to remove the lower door trim (the plastic bit the runs along the door sill) on the drivers side. Its about 8 screws - dont forget the one that is on the side by the seat belt. Its possible the cables run both sides of the car - mine didnt - they just ran to the rear on the drivers side then split across the rear seats undere thr carpet.
2 remove this and lift up the carpet - you will probably see a plastic tube attached to the side of the car (depending on model) youre looking for 2 wires inside it that run to the rear of the car. Some cars just have the cables lying on the floor.
3 The cables will run under the carpet and into the rear 1/4 panel reappearing somewhere behind the rear seats to the speakers. To remove the rear 1/4's and rear hatch section, you need to remove the 10mm bolts (theres about 6 I think) and then carefully prise the retaining lugs (the ones you snapped) off. The rear 1/4 p[anel will just pull away but again depending on the model of car you may have the window tops, the vynal on the 1/4 panel may be attached to the B pillar so you may need to remove the rubber door seal (this just pulls off - do it carefully)
4. The speaker cables will also run under the front footwell and up to the centre console to the stereo. To get at the wires you need to remove the lower A pillar door trim and lower shelves (a couple of bolts) - trace the wire up through the floor and over the pedals (thats where mine went). It will probably get blended into the loom so you may wish to save a sh1te load of time and buy some decent speaker cable and just relay it following the old cable route.
Connecting to the stereo all depends on the stereo youre getting. Haynes (I think) has a wiring diagram for the cable colours so you can see which is to which speaker. You should be able to splice these into the original ISO socket.
It'll take you a day or so if yer not sure wjhat youre doing and you'll probably scream a fair bit due to lack of access. Also dont even try and remove the front speakers frpom the dash - you WILL explode attempting and probably lose 1/2 your knuckle skin in the process.

I am not trying to remove the front door cards. They are not a problem anymore. My main concern is trying to replace the speaker wire to the back speakers.
I can follow it all the way to the front but am really unsure about how they connect into the wiring loom/connecters. Is it difficult to replace them, would i be better getting someone professional to do it?

Go to your local audio motorist shop and purchase some speaker wire.
Remove your head unit and if you can figure out which wires from the multiplug are your front speakers snip them off leaving plenty of wire to play with.
Run the new wire from your door cards through the dash (tape the wire to a coat hanger to make it easier) Left hand side can be made a little easier by removing the glove box.
Use bullet connectors (or solder and heat shrink) and connect the new wire to the old wire.
Might be a good idea to label behind the head unit for future reference.
